=== Life Sketch ===
Ulrich III of Neuchâtel , known as Ulrich III of Neuchâtel-Nidau, (?-died between June 20 and December 31, 1225), is co-lord then co-count of Neuchâtel, count of Fenis , Aarberg and Strassberg, Lord of Arconciel-Illens and Valangin. He is the second son of Ulrich II of Neuchâtel and Berthe de Granges.
«b»Biography«/b»
After the death of his father he became co-lord of Neuchâtel with his brother Rodolphe II from 1191 until 1196, then with his nephew Berthold I of Neuchâtel, son of Rodolphe II , from 1196. Co-Count of Neuchâtel 1 from 1196, by claiming the title of "come and dominated of Novo castro" always with his nephew Berthold, until 1218 date when he becomes only count of Neuchâtel, Berthold remains him lord of Neuchâtel from 1218 to his death.
He receives around 1170, from the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, the office of bailiff of Biel , which will become hereditary. This bailiwick includes the Val-de-Saint-Imier and the mountain of Diesse of which Ulrich becomes owner. In 1180 he received the investiture of several German and French fiefdoms from the bishop of Lausanne. He participated in the Third Crusade which he returned in 1190. In 1198 Roger de Vico Pisano, bishop of Lausanne, grants him the right to " coin", right that the Counts of Neuchâtel will keep until 1225. In 1218 he exchanged seigniories which he owned on the Saone against the Val-de-Travers which he erected as a barony. This fief will be entrusted, in 1421, to Jacques de Plancone, said "the Great" by Conrad IV of Furstemberg, Count of Freiburg and Neuchâtel.
Four years after having given his franchises to the city of Neuchâtel Ulrich III and his nephew Berthold I of Neuchâtel share their patrimony, the last remains lord of Neuchâtel and Swiss-Romande lands while Ulrich keeps the Swiss-German lands and the county of Neuchâtel, his deeds will be recorded in 1215, 1225 and 1226. This division is not made without reason, this year 1218 and that of the death of Berthold V de Zähringen then rector of Burgundy, with his disappearance his rights come back de facto to the Germanic Emperor Frederick II and his son Henry II of Swabia which implies that all the dynasts that had been submitted to Berthold Vhenceforth saw themselves immediately dependent on the German Empire. To maintain its independence, Ulrich III of Neuchâtel decided to separate Nidau , Büren and Aarberg from the seigniory of Neuchâtel to form a set with Strasberg (which was a castle in Bettlach ), Illens and ' Arconciel , at the same time, taking advantage of the confusion that caused the transfer of rights to the German emperor he did "confirm" County Neuchatel.
