  Gerard I of Guelders (c. 1060-8 March 1129) was Count of Guelders (Gelre in Dutch). He was the son of Theodoric of Wassenberg.
  
  He married to Clementia of Aquitaine, although that proposed marriage seems to be based on a falsified document. It is also possible that he married an unnamed daughter of William I, Count of Burgundy.
  
  Gerard had three children:
  1.) Jutta of Wassenberg, married Waleran II of Limburg.
  
  2.) Yolande of Wassenberg (Yolande of Guelders), married 1) Baldwin III, Count of Hainaut and 2) Godfrey II de Ribemont Châtelain de Valenciennes
  
  3.) Gerard II, Count of Guelders married Ermengarde of Zutphen, daughter of Otto II, Count of Zutphen.

  “EUSTACHE II aux Grenons (Gernobadatus), Count of Boulogne, Count of Lens. He married (1st) before 1049 GODA OF ENGLAND, widow of Dreux, Count of Vexin (died 1035), and daughter of Aethelred II, King of England, by Emma, daughter of Richard I, Duke of Normandy. Their issue, if any, is uncertain. In 1047 he and his brother, Count Lambert, and Count Baldwin V of Flanders were in attendance at the court of King Henry III of Germany, where they witnessed Henry's confirmation of a gift to St. Medard. Shortly afterwards both he and Count Baldwin V joined in the rebellion of Godfrey the Bearded, Duke of Lower Lorraine, who sought to reunite the duchies of Upper and Lower Lorraine under his control. In 1049 Pope Leo IX excommunicated Eustache at the Council of Reims for incest, he and his wife being related within the prohibited degrees, specifically in the 6th and 5th degrees of kindred by common descent from King Alfred the Great of England. He was involved in a serious incident with the citizens of Dover in 1051 during one of his English visits. In 1055 he and King Henry III witnessed Duke Godfrey the Bearded's foundation charter of Longliers Priory. His wife, Goda, died before 1056. He married (2nd) in 1057 [SAINT] IDA OF VERDUN, daughter of Godfrey I the Bearded, Count of Verdun, Duke of Upper Lorraine, 1044-47, Duke of Lower Lorraine (1065-1069), by his 1st wife, Doda. They had four sons, Eustache III [Count of Boulogne and Lens], Godfrey of Bouillon [Duke of Lower Lorraine, Defender or Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre], Baldwin (I) [Count of Edessa, King of Jerusalem], and William, and one daughter, Agnes. By an unidentified mistress (or mistresses), he also had two illegitimate sons, Geoffrey and Eustace (I) Garnier. In 1056 he witnessed a charter in favor of Saint-Bertin Abbey issued by Count Baldwin V of Flanders. He was a key participant in the Norman invasion of England in 1066. He witnessed a charter for William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, at Bayeux probably in 1066, and a writ for him in England after the Conquest dated 1067. While King William was in Normandy in 1067, Eustache allied himself with subversive elements in Kent and landed an invasion force at Dover. As a result, Eustache lost his English lands. Sometime before 1075, probably in 1071-74, he and King William were reconciled and renewed their friendship, after which Eustache's English lands were restored to him. At the Domesday survey in 1086 he was holding lands in eleven counties in England, the majority of which were in Essex. His wife, Ida, was holding lands in 1086 in Dorset, Somerset, and Surrey. EUSTACHE II, Count of Boulogne, died in or before 1088, when his son, Eustache, is styled "Eustachius juvenis, Bolniensis comes." In 1102 King Henry I confirmed to the canons of the priory of St. Wuknar in Boulogne the manor of Nutfield, Surrey, "at the prayer of Ida Countess of Boulogne, who held that manor from [King] William I." She died 13 August 1113.

They had one daughter, Maud [Countess of Boulogne, Queen of England]. By an unknown mistress (or mistresses), he had three illegitimate sons, Raoul, Eustache, and Godfrey. In 1105 he founded the Priory of Rumilly-leComte, a cluniac house in the Pas de Calais, to which religious house he gave the advowsons of High Ongar, Little Laver, and Stanford Rivers, Essex. In 1107 he witnessed a charter for Richard de Rivers. In old age, he resigned the county of Boulogne to his son-in-law, Stephen, and became a monk at Rumilly-le-Comte Priory, where he was living in 1125.   Gerhard alternately named himself after Wassenberg (Gerhard III von Wassenberg) and after Geldern (Gerhard I von Geldern), until 1118 Geldern prevailed in the naming. As the owner of the imperial bailiwick, as a church bailiff and as an allodial landowner, Gerhard felt compelled to shift the focus of his sphere of power and to call himself Count of Geldern (1096). As a result of this shift in focus, Geldern Castle, which can only be traced back to 1237, was probably built at this time. Alongside the Duke of Brabant and the Count of Luxembourg-Namur, Gerhard I von Geldern was the largest secular territorial lord in Lower Lorraine. The Chronicon Huberti names "Gerardus et Gozwinus filius eius [=Theodericum]" in 1082[981]. Graf von Wassenberg. The Gesta Abbatum Trudonensium records that "Gerardum…de castello…Guassenberge et Gozwinum avunculum eius de castello…Heinesberge" introduced abbot Luipo into the abbey of Saint-Trond in 1085[982]. "Gerardus de Gelre, Arnoldus comes de Berge, Waleramus comes de Lemburg, Gerardus comes de Iuliaco…" signed the charter dated 1085 under which Friedrich Archbishop of Köln donated property to Kloster St Martin, Köln[983]. "Heinricus…Romanorum imperator augustus" confirmed a donation of property "in Traiecto quam comes Gerardus de Wassenbergen invaserat" to St Servatius, Maastricht by charter dated 1087[984]. Friedrich [I] Archbishop of Köln confirmed the dismissal of "comes Gerhardus et frater eius Heinricus" from the Vogteischaft of Kloster Siegburg by charter dated 5 Apr 1118 witnessed by "Comes Gerhardus et frater eius Heinricus, Comes Adolfus de Monte, Comes Adolfus de Saphenberg, Comes Gerhardus de Iuliaco, Gerhardus iunior filius Gerhardi, Gerhardus de Caesle, Arnulfus de Odenkirche"[990]. Friedrich [I] Archbishop of Köln confirmed donations to Kloster Dunwald and shared the Vogteischaft with "comitis Adolphi" by charter dated 1118 witnessed by "Adolfus comes de Monte et frater eius Euerhardus, Gerardus comes de Wassenberg […et filius eius Gerardus], Theodericus comes de Thonburch, Theodericus comes de Ara, domnus Goswinus de Hennesberg et frater eius Gerardus…Gerardus de Wyckerode…"[991]. "Comes Gerhardus" founded a church "in meo allodio Wassenberg" by charter dated 30 Sep 1118[992]. [Friedrich [I] Archbishop of Köln confirmed a donation to Kloster Siegburg by charter dated 1129 witnessed by "…Liberi. Paganus dux, Franco burgicomes, Gerhardus comes de Gelre, Adolfus comes de Monte, Adolfus comes de Saffenberg…"[993]. It is unclear whether this document refers to Gerhard [I] or Gerhard [II].] [The necrology of Wassenberg records the death 24 Oct [1131] of “dominus Gerardus Longus comes Gelrie, qui fuit fundator et dotator huius ecclesie in Wassenberg”[994]. It is unclear from this document whether it refers to Gerhard [I] or Gerhard [II].] m [firstly] ---. The name and origin of the wife of Gerhard is not known. [m [secondly] (after 1100?) as her [third] husband, CLEMENTIA, widow firstly of CONRAD [I] Comte [de Luxembourg] [and secondly of --- Graf von Gleiberg], daughter of --- (-4 Jan 1142). Follow her hyperlink for details of her first marriage and of her supposed second marriage. This third marriage is confirmed by the second version of a charter confirming the foundation of Kloster Schiffenberg, dated 1129, which records the donation made by "Clementia comitissa de Glizberc…per manum Gerhardi mariti sui comitis de Gelre"[995]. The donor is identified in other sources as the widow of Conrad [I] Comte [de Luxembourg]. Szabolcs de Vajay dismisses Clementia’s supposed third marriage, assuming that the document in question is spurious[996]. However, the language of the document is not obviously anachronistic, the only surprising element being the large number of witnesses whose names could have been added later. The doubt surrounding the authenticity of these documents is discussed at length by Wyss[997]. This third marriage could also help explain the marriage of Clementia’s grandson by her first husband, Conrad [II] Comte de Luxembourg, with the widow of her third husband’s son by his first wife, which would presumably have been arranged by Clementia.    Note: Gerard I, Count of Guelders (c. 1060 – 8 March 1129) was Count of Guelders (Gelre in Dutch). He was the son of Dietrich of Wassenberg. He may have been married to Clementia of Aquitaine, although that proposed marriage seems to be based on a falsified document.[1] It is also possible that he married an unnamed daughter of William I, Count of Burgundy.[2] Gerard had three children:[3] Jutta of Wassenberg, married Waleran II of Limburg. Yolande of Wassenberg (Yolande of Guelders), married 1) Baldwin III, Count of Hainaut and 2) Godfrey II de Ribemont Châtelain de Valenciennes Gerard II, Count of Guelders married Ermengarde of Zutphen, daughter of Otto II, Count of Zutphen.
