=== Life Sketch ===
Amadeus I of Geneva (1098-1178) was count of Geneva. He succeeded his father in the county's government in 1128, and remained count of Geneva until his death in 1178. Amadeus was the son of Aymon I of Geneva (the preceding count) and of Ida Faucigny.
«b»Biography«/b»
During his lifetime Amadeus I added the city of Annecy to his territories, thereby increasing the power of his County.
He also sought the protection of the House of Zähringen, after losing the rights to the dioceses of Sion, Lausanne and Geneva. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1156 granted the rights to Berthold IV of Zähringen instead. However, Pope Alexander III took the bishop of Lausanne under his protection and superseded all claims to Lausanne, thereby reducing the power of the Duke of Zähringen. The three bishops of the dioceses in question, however, wanted to maintain autonomy from all parties concerned.
In 1162, Amadeus permitted the use of the land of Vaud, and the forests that belonged to him, by the Abbot of Haut-Crêt.
In 1178 Amadeus donated cannons to the capital of the St. Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, and the vineyards and tithes collected in Bossey.
«b»Family«/b»
Amadeus was the son of Aymon I of Geneva (f. 1128) and Ida Faucigny, daughter of Sir Luís I of Faucigny. For two years Amadeus was married to the Lady Matilde of Cuiseaux, daughter of Hugo I of Cuiseaux, with whom he had:
1.) William I of Geneva (1132-1196) was married to Margaret Beatriz of Faucigny with whom he had three children.
In a second marriage (1137), with Lady Beatriz de Domène, daughter of Lady Beatriz de Domène of Domène, he had:
1.) Sir Amedée of Gex.
2.) Beatrice of Geneva, married to Henry I of Faucigny, baron de Faucigny.
3.) Lady Margaret of Geneva (fl. 1160), countess of Geneva, and married to Henry I of Faucigny (1155-1197), baron of Faucigny.

Note: AMEDEE [I] ([1100/10]-28 Jun 1178). "Aymo comes Gebennensis et Amadeus filius eius" renounced rights to certain property in favour of the church of Saint-Martin by undated charter[48]. "Amedeus filius Gebennensis comitis" renounced rights over "Guilermo Rufo" in favour of the church of Geneva by undated charter[49]. According to Europäische Stammtafeln[50], he was the son of Comte Aimon [I]. However, it is unlikely that he was the son of Comte Aimon’s wife Ita if his date of death is correct. Comte de Genève. "Amedeus comes Gebennensis" granted privileges to the monastery of Saint-Martin, for the absolution of "patris et matris et uxoris mee" and for the salvation of "filii mei", by charter dated 2 Jul 1137[51]. A charter dated 1139 records the foundation of Hauterive abbey by Guy Bishop of Lausanne and donations "in manu Dominus Wilhelmus de Glana", donations made with the consent of "Amadeus comes Gebennensis" and witnessed by "Willelmus de Glana, Torinus et Joran de Grueria, Radulphus de Ponte"[52]. "Amedeus Gebennensis comes" donated property to the monastery of Abondance "in manu…consanguinei mei domini Bocardis ipsius ecclesiæ abbatis", for the souls of "patris mei Aymonis et matris meæ Itæ et Willelmi fratris mei et Matildis uxoris mæ" and for the protection of "filiorum meorum Wilelmi et Amedei", by charter dated 1153[53]. A charter dated 24 Feb 1155 records an agreement between the Bishop of Geneva and "Amedeo comite" relating to jurisdiction over the town of Geneva[54]. Avoué of Geneva 1156. "A…comes Gebennensis" granted rights to the abbey of Hautcrêt by charter dated 1162[55]. "Amedeus Gebennensium comes…et filius eius Guillelmus" restored the rights of the bishopric of Geneva, with the consent of "Amedeus quoque junior filius comitis", by undated charter[56]. A charter dated 1177 records that "Dominus Bertolfus Dux" founded the town of Fribourg, witnessed by "…Amedeus comes Gebennarum, Uldricus de Novocastro…"[57]. The necrology of Lausanne records the death 28 Jun of "Amedeus comes Gebenensis"[58]. m firstly (before 1131) MATHILDE de Cuiseaux, daughter of HUGUES Seigneur de Cuiseaux et de Clairvaux & his wife --- (-before 2 Jul 1137). "Amedeus Gebennensis comes" donated property to the monastery of Abondance "in manu…consanguinei mei domini Bocardis ipsius ecclesiæ abbatis", for the souls of "patris mei Aymonis et matris meæ Itæ et Willelmi fratris mei et Matildis uxoris mæ" and for the protection of "filiorum meorum Wilelmi et Amedei", by charter dated 1153[59]. The primary source which confirms her parentage has not yet been identified. Her date of death is set by the charter dated 2 Jul 1137 under which her husband "Amedeus comes Gebennensis" granted privileges to the monastery of Saint-Martin, for the absolution of "patris et matris et uxoris mee"[60]. m secondly ([1137/40?]) --- [de Domène], daughter of --- (-after 1170). The primary source which confirms her origin and marriage has not been identified. The following documents suggest her connection with the Domène family. An undated charter, which compiles records of numerous donations to Domène, includes an undated report that “Pontius Ainardi prior de Domina” acquired the pledge of property “in parrochia de Tencins in territorio de Theis jure hæreditario” from “milite Hugone scilicet de Domina”, who was leaving on crusade, with the consent of “Dalmatius de Dum” and guaranteed by “domina...comitissa Gebennensis...et Aymo filius eius”[61]. Monteynard dates the priorship of Pons Aynard to “vers 1140-1147-1160”[62], suggesting that the pledge was given just before the 1147 crusade, which if correct indicates that the unnamed “comitissa Gebennensis” was the second wife of Amédée [I]. Jean Bishop of Grenoble, by charter dated 17 Mar 1340 (“millesimo tercentesimo quadragesimo”), quoted the charter dated 1170 (“millesimo centesimo septuagesimo, episcopatus...domini Johannes Gratianopolitani episcopi decimo octavo”) under which “Hugo Alti Villaris et uxor mea Aalis et filius meus Hugo, Soffredus quoque, uxor eius et filius eius Soffredus, Nantelmus Aynardi et filii eius Ainardus et Arbertus et Petrus, Hugo de Rocheta et filius eius Vuillelmus, comitissa Gebennensis...” and others founded La Chartreuse de Saint-Hugon[63]. Williams suggests that she was probably the daughter of Pons Ainard [II] Seigneur de Domène[64], whose supposed ancestry and descendants are shown by Lainé[65], although he highlights that De Moura names her as the daughter of Guigues Ainard Seigneur de Domène (son of Pons Ainard [II]) and his wife “Aude de Morges”[66]. Amédée [I] & his first wife had [two or more] children:
a) GUILLAUME [I] (-25 Jul 1196).
b) other child[ren] (-after 2 Jul 1137).
Amédée [I] & his second wife had three children:
c) AIMON (-after 1147).
d) AMEDEE (-[Dec 1210/17 Oct 1211]).
e) COMTESSON (-before 1188).
