Coming to the throne at a time when the Byzantine Empire was threatenedby foreign enemies on every side, Alexius began his reign by combiningwith the Venetians to resist Norman invaders led by Robert Guiscard inGreece. In 1091 he defeated the Pechenegs, a Turkic tribe raiding theempire from the north; in the same year he stabilized the situation inthe east by concluding a treaty with the Seljuk Turks. In 1095 Alexiusappealed to Pope Urban II for help in recovering Anatolia from theSeljuks, thus helping to inspire the First Crusade. He exacted an oath ofallegiance from the Crusade's leaders (among them, Bohemond, the son ofhis old enemy Robert Guiscard) when they arrived in Constantinople thefollowing year.   He was a famous general and his armyu occupied Constantinople. Botaneiates abdicated and on Easter Day, 4 Apr 1081, Alexius was crowned Emperor. By the time he came to poewr Byzantium had a complete loss of poewr in Asia, lost all of its Italian possessions, and was weakened in the Balkans. He had invited the Western powers to start the First Crusade and by 1097 they had captured Nicaea. He had agreed to supply the Crusaders and in return the Crusaders agreed to turn over any capture cities that were formerly part of the Byzantine Empire and thus they turned over Nicaea. Falling into conflict with the Crusaders when Bohemund established the Kingdom of Antioch, Alexius defeated him and in 1108 signed a treaty in which Bohemund agreed to be a vasal of Alexius. He helped establish the system of feudalism.

This method, which was to be increasingly employed by his successors, inevitably weakened central revenues and imperial authority. He repressed heresy and maintained the traditional imperial role of protecting the Eastern Orthodox church, but he did not hesitate to seize ecclesiastical treasure when in financial need. His relations with Muslim powers were disrupted on occasion and former valued Byzantine possessions, such as Antioch, passed into the hands of arrogant Western princelings, who even introduced Latin Christianity in place of Greek.
