She was not married to an emperor, but when her son Alexios I was and he bestowed the title on her for her valuable role as what would normally be called Empress Mother, though in this case the “Augusta” in Imperatrix Augusta” is of the very highest distinction. Not all wives, nor certainly mothers, of emperors were given this title in the Roman (Byzantine) Empire.
