=== Life Sketch ===
Alberto Azzo II (997 or July 10, 1009, Modena-August 20, 1097, Modena), Margrave of Milan, and Liguria, Count of Gavello and Padua, Rovigo, Lunigiana, Monselice, and Montagnana, was a powerful nobleman in the Holy Roman Empire. He is considered the founder of Casa d'Este (House of Este), having been head of the first family to be master of Este, a town of Padua.
«b»Life«/b»
Alberto Azzo II was the only son of Albert Azzo I, Margrave of Milan and Adela of Milan. He inherited his father's offices around 1029, and continually increased his properties in northern Italy. Around 1073 he made a castle at Este his residence, from which the House of Este took its name. Before his building project, Este was little more than a village.
In the Investiture Controversy between Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor, and Pope Gregory VII, Azzo attempted to mediate, but later he joined the side of the pope.
«b»First marriage«/b»
Azzo II married Kunigunde (also called Chuniza), the daughter of Welf II, Count of Altdorf, in 1035/6. Azzo's son with Chuniza, Welf, moved first to Carinthia and then to Bavaria, giving rise to one of the most important families in European history, the Guelphs.
«b»Second marriage«/b»
Around 1050, Azzo married again, to Garsende, daughter of Herbert I, Count of Maine, around 1050. In 1069-1070, he tried to acquire Maine for his son Hugh, because his wife, Garsende, was a co-heiress of the previous counts of Maine. Hugh was declared count, but he could not prevail against Robert, the Duke of Normandy, who had been betrothed to the last heiress. Another son from this marriage, Fulk I of Milan, made the first documented use of the title "Marquis d'Este."
«b»Issue
«/b»With his first wife, Chuniza, Azzo had one known child:
1.)Welf (died November 6, 1101, Paphos) Duke of Bavaria from 1070 to 1077 and from 1096 to his death who was the first member of the Welf branch of the House of Este.
With his second wife, Garsende, Azzo had two known sons:
1.) Fulco I, Margrave of Milan (died 1128), ancestor of the Italian branch of the House of Este
2.) Hugh V, Count of Maine (died 1131), had no issue.
Some sources say he also married Vitalia Orseolo, daughter of Peter Orseolo. They had a daughter: Itta.
He had an extra-marital affair with, or perhaps married, Matilda, sister of William/Guglielmo, Bishop of Pavia (r.1069-1102/3), with whom he had a daughter named Adelasia, who married Guglielmo Adelardi.
«b»Death«/b»
Alberto Azzo II was extremely long-lived. He lived to at least his mid-80s and was perhaps one hundred years old when he died. He died in August 1097 at the monastery of Vangadizza, near Legnago, where he was buried.

Biografia

- Title: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy -Heribert "Eville-chien" du Maine, Comte du Maine
Publication: Name: http://shop.fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/MAINE.htm#HerbertIMainedied1032A;
Note: HERIBERT [I] "Evigilans Canis/Eveille-chien" du Maine, son of HUGUES [III] Comte du Maine & his wife --- ([990/1000]-15 Feb [1032/35]). “Widdo Lononis filius” donated “Gaudiacus” to Saint-Pierre de la Couture, with the consent of “dominis meis Hugone atque Herberto comitibus et vice comite Radulpho eiusque filii” by undated charter dated to [1000/15][131]. He succeeded his father in [1014/15] as Comte du Maine. The Gesta Ambaziensium names "comes pernimium iuvenis Herbertus cognomento Evigilans Canem" as ruler of "Cenomannicum consulatum" during the life of Lizois de Basauges (see the document ANJOU)[132], which if correct suggests that Héribert must have been born during the later part of 10th century (which is consistent with the birth date range attributed to his son Hugues [IV], see below). The Actus pontificum Cenomannis names "Herberto, comite Cenomanensi" during the bishopric of "Avesgaudi" (from [997] to [1036]) and records disputes between the two[133]. Orderic Vitalis records that "Herbertus Cenommanorum comes ex prosapia (ut fertur) Caroli Magni originem", known as "Evigilans-Canem" because of his merit, after the death of “Hugonis patris sui”, whom “Fulco senior” [Foulques III Comte d´Anjou] had subjugated, attacked Anjou[134]. "Herbertus Evigilans canem cognomine" donated property to the abbey of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Cour du Mans after defeating "Odone Campaniensi…comite" by charter dated Jul 1016[135], which shows that Héribert must have reversed his father's policy of support for Eudes Comte de Blois (see above). The Chronicle of Adémar de Chabannes records that Foulques "Nerra" Comte d'Anjou captured "Arbertum, Cenomannis comitem" at Saintes, "prima quadregismæ dominica post cœnam nocte" (7/8 Mar) according to a later passage, in 1029 according to the editor of the version consulted[136]. The Martyrologe de la Couture records the death "XV Kal Mar" of "Herbertus comes Cenom"[137].
m --- (-after 8 Mar [1029]). The name of Héribert's wife is not known. The Chronicle of Adémar de Chabannes records that the wife of Foulques "Nerra" Comte d'Anjou attempted to capture "uxorem Arberti" on the same day her husband was captured but that she was able to escape[138].
Comte Héribert [I] & his wife had four children:
1. HUGUES [IV] du Maine ([1018/22]-26 Mar 1051).
2. GERSENDE du Maine ([1025/35]-).
3. PAULE du Maine ([1025/35]-).
4. BIOTE du Maine ([1025/35]-poisoned Falaise 1063).
