He succeeded his brother Dirk IV after his death in 1049. History [edit] The brother of Floris was killed by an army of the bishops of Utrecht, Metz and Liège. Count Dirk was childless and his younger brother was heir, but initially had to flee. Once Floris was appointed count, the relationship with the emperor and the bishops remained bad. Floris was in conflict with the emperor about the toll on the Merwede (probably at Vlaardingen, so downstream from the current Merwede). Moreover, he tried to expand his property in the river land and therefore came into conflict with Bishop Willem van Cuijk. In 1058, Regent Agnes gave bishop Willem van Cuijk of Utrecht, Henry II of Leuven, Wichard van Gelder, Anno II archbishop of Cologne, Diederik bishop of Liege and Egbert I van Meißen, the Margrave of Friesland (Friesland and Groningen), order Floris to call order. The first real battle was fought in 1061 at Oudheusden. The Frisian army of Floris was heavily in the minority and therefore had prepared the battlefield with large numbers of pitfalls. In this way his opponents were in great confusion and a large number of them were immediately put out of action. Floris then easily won the battle. The next battle took place on 28 June 1061 at Nederhemert. Floris attacked the troops of Cologne, Brunswick and Cuijk and managed to scare them quickly. The Frisians then rested in the shade of the trees along the Meuse. Herman van Cuijk, Viscount of Utrecht, regrouped his troops and attacked the unsuspecting army. Floris was killed along with hundreds of his men. Floris was originally buried in the first abbey of Egmond. He is now after excavation in the new mausoleum in the Abbey of Egmond, which was rebuilt in 1935 - although it is doubted whether the skeleton found in 1935 was from Floris. Floris married Geertruida van Saksen. She was the daughter of Bernhard II, Duke of Saxony, and Eilika of Schweinfurt. Their children were: Dirk V of Holland (1054-1091) Floris, who died at a young age in Liège, where he might have been sent for his upbringing Bertha van Holland (about 1058-1094), married to Philip I of France possibly Adelheid (1045-1085), married to Boudewijn I van Guînes

On a retreat from Zaltbommel he was ambushed and killed in battle at Nederhemert (called Hamerth at the time), on 28 June 1061. Family and children[edit] He married ca. 1050 Gertrude of Saxony, daughter of Bernard II, Duke of Saxony and Eilika of Schweinfurt, and had at least three children by her: Dirk V (c. 1052, Vlaardingen – 17 June 1091). Bertha (c. 1055–1094, Montreuil-sur-Mer), who married Philip I of France in 1072.[1] Floris (b. c. 1055), a canon at Liége. Gertrude married secondly in 1063 Robert the Frisian, Count of Flanders,[1] who also acted as guardian for the children of her previous marriage and as regent for his stepson until 1071.
Page: Sources show the Bertha of Holland, Queen of France's father is Floris I, Count of Holland. The birth year that was chosen showed that this figure (Florens I. von Holland Graf von Holland) was born over 100 years after he died?
