=== Life Sketch ===
Frederick II (c. 995-1026), son of Thierry I of the House of Ardennes and Richilde von Blieskastel, daughter of Folmar III, Count in Bliesgau; was the count of Bar and duke of Lorraine, co-reigning with his father from 1019.
On the Emperor Henry II's death in 1024, he joined Ernest II, Duke of Swabia, in revolt against the new king, Conrad II. Soon they made peace and recognised the new king. Frederick died soon after.
He married Matilda of Swabia, daughter of Herman II, Duke of Swabia, and sister-in-law of Conrad. They had three children:
1.) Sophia, countess of Bar and Pont-à-Mousson, married Louis, count of Montbéliard
2.) Frederick, his successor
3.) Beatrice, married firstly Boniface, margrave of Tuscany, and secondly Godfrey III, Duke of Lower Lotharingia; mother of Matilda of Canossa

- Title: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy - FREDERIC ([997/99]-17/18 May 1026)
Author: FMG Projects/MedLands
Publication: Name: https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/LOTHARINGIA.htm#Sophiedied1093;
Note: FREDERIC ([997/99]-17/18 May 1026). The Gesta Episcoporum Virdunensium names "filius huius Theoderici fuit iunior Frederici, qui mortuus est ante patrem suum" and his two daughters[137]. He was titled duke during the lifetime of his father, sometimes referred to as FREDERIC II Duke of Upper Lotharingia, but Poull believes he was not appointed associate duke[138]. He allied himself with Foulques III "Nerra" Comte d'Anjou to support his father against Eudes II Comte de Blois, fighting him at Pontlevoy and in Champagne. He opposed the election of Konrad II King of Germany in 1024, and refused to swear allegiance to him. He made contact with the Italian lords who were also opposed to the new king. The rebels offered the crown to Robert II King of France, who refused it, although he supported the movement and sent troops to attack Metz. He was repulsed, but Duke Frederic was not discouraged and was planning a new revolt when he died[139]. The necrology of Verdun Saint-Vanne records the death "XV Kal Jun" of "Fredericus dux"[140]. m ([1016]) as her second husband, MATHILDE of Swabia, widow of KONRAD Duke of Carinthia [Salier], daughter of HERMANN II Duke of Swabia & his wife Gerberga of Upper Burgundy ([988]-20 Jul [1031/32]), bur Worms Cathedral). Thietmar refers to "Konrad" as son-in-law of Hermann Duke of Swabia, recording that they attacked Strasbourg together after the election of Heinrich II King of Germany[141]. The Alberti Milioli Notarii Regini Liber de Temporibus names "comitissam Beatricam…de Gallia…filia comitis Frederic, mater…domina Matilda", but does not give the origin of Mathilde[142]. The primary source which records her second marriage has not so far been identified. However, the Chronicon Sancti Michælis, monasterii in pago Virdunensi names "duabus puellulis Sophia et Beatrice" as daughters of the son of "duce Theodorico", specifying that the empress was their amita and that she adopted them after their father died[143]. The Annalista Saxo names "Machtildis" sister of Gisela, wife of Emperor Konrad II, and her third husband[144]. She married thirdly Esiko Graf im Schwabengau [Askanier-Ballenstedt]. She attended the Easter celebrations at Ingelheim in 1030[145]. The Liber Anniversariorum of Einsiedeln records the death in Jul of "Mechthild soror imperatricis Gislæ"[146]. Duke Frédéric & his wife had [four] children:
a) FREDERIC ([1017]-22 May 1033, bur [Abbaye de Saint-Mihiel]).
b) SOPHIE ([1018]-21 Jan 1093).
c) BEATRIX ([1019]-18 Apr 1076, bur Pisa Cathedral).
d) [PETRONILLE .
