Udo I of the Wetterau (* around 900; † 949) from the family of the Conradines was Count of the Wetterau and Duke in Alsace. He was a son of Duke Gebhard II of Lorraine, his brother was Duke Hermann I of Swabia.
In the Battle of Andernach on October 2, 939, it was Udo and his cousin Konrad Kurzbold, Count in Niederlahngau, who defeated the two dukes Eberhard of Franconia and Giselbert of Lorraine, who were in revolt against the king and later Emperor Otto I. The two dukes were the first and second dukes to be defeated. Although both were Conradines and cousins of Eberhard, they were on Otto's side. They had followed the marauding rebels with a small force, but attacked only when most of the enemy had already crossed the Rhine, but the two leaders had not yet. Eberhard fell in battle, and Giselbert drowned in the Rhine while trying to escape to the other side. According to Thietmar of Merseburg, Udo is said to have slain Eberhard with his own hands. The rebellion against Otto I thus collapsed.
Udo inherited the allodes of his cousin Eberhard, but not his dukedom. King Otto also thanked him for his loyalty by granting Udo permission to divide his fiefs and counties among his sons as if they were hereditary estates. In 949 Udo also inherited his cousin Konrad Kurzbold.
Udo had four children:
Heribert of the Wetterau
Gebhard († 938)
Udo II († 982)
Judith, Countess of Stade
Possible paternity:
Conrad, Duke of Swabia († 997)

Author: Four children, brothers and sister: Considerable controversy surrounds the paternity of these children. Graf Konrad son of Gebhard (died 982) and Graf Udo son of Gebhard (died 949) have both been proposed as their father, Jackman being the principal proponent of the former theory while Hlavitschka has written extensively in support of the latter. It is unnecessary to repeat the detailed arguments in support of each case, as they are fully set out elsewhere, and particularly because each has appeal and neither is obviously preferable. From a purely chronological point of view, the estimated birth date range of the daughter Judith does suggest more difficulty in sustaining the argument in favour of Graf Konrad being their father. The introduction of the name Heribert into the family suggests a strong family connection between these four siblings and the Vermandois family. As shown above, it is suspected that the wives of Gebhard (died 949) and Udo son of Gebhard (also died 949) wer
