=== Life Sketch ===
Enguerrand I st Coucy (approx. 1042-1116 ). Son of Dreux or Drogon de Boves. From his father, he inherited the lordship of Boves, and marrying first Ade de Marle, he acquired the seigneuries of Marle, Coucy and La Fere.
In 1085, he became count of Amiens of the head of his grandmother. In 1105 , the abbey of Saint-Fuscien south of Amiens is endowed by Enguerrand de Boves of the seigneurie whole.
He becomes owner in 1080 of the castle of Coucy, which he gives the name to the House formed by his descendants .
Family
Enguerrand I and Ade Marle, daughter of Létaud (or Liétard) Roucy (or Marle), lord of Marle and Coucy, and niece of Count Ebles I st of Roucy 2 have two children:
1.) Thomas de Marle
2.) Agnès de Coucy
Guibert, abbot of the abbey of Nogent-sous-Coucy notes that Thomas de Marle had such an ignominious mother, that is to say of a life so overwhelmed and unbridled, that for that he was never much loved by his father. Ade was in fact an independent woman, with a generous temperament and assertive personality, leading her life (love in particular) as she pleased. This type of free women, "scandalous", who could not pass the leash, is less rare than it seems in the Middle Ages among the aristocrats heir to seigneuries: think of Sibyl of Porcien, Eleanor of Aquitaine, to Elisabeth Ire Tudor a little later. Thus, it is not proven that his heir Thomas de Boveshis child was really Enguerrand did not really treat him as a son, and Thomas did not necessarily see Enguerrand as a father, but had a tense relationship.
Enguerrand is also not free from sins, since he devotes himself to the love of other women. According to sources, after having repudiated Ade de Marle for adultery or after widowhood, Enguerrand de Boves married in second marriage Sibyl of Château-Porcien . Degraded condition Woman (Porcien County, which was powerful, is reduced to a trickle: her heir will fail to save him), Sibylle is the daughter of Roger, Count of Porcien , and former wife of Godfrey I st from Namur, who had divorced her for notorious misconduct. His free life appears to Ade de Marle, but in decadent mode.
«b»History
«/b»He participated in the first crusade in 1096 and is present at the headquarters of Antioch, which capitulates onJune 3, 1098. The legend says it's Enguerrand I st who, during a battle against the Moors during the First Crusade in the Holy Land, who lost his banner, cut into strips her blue cloak lined with red to make a new one that later became the coat of arms of Coucy: three red bands and three bands made of bells, head to tail, azure and white ( heraldic fur: the vair ).
In 1100, returned to France, he enters into conflict with his son Thomas de Marle and obtains the support of his cousin Bishop Enguerrand de Laon. He then reconciled with him during the events of the Commune of Amiens to fight against the revolted bourgeois.
The inhabitants of Amiens having obtained from King Louis le Gros, the permission to settle in commune, with the support of the bishop Geoffroy and Guermond his vidame, asked Thomas to support them in their works against Adam, the squire who was guarding the Tower of Castillon for Enguerrand, the count, father of Thomas. But Thomas reconciled with his father and fought with him against the inhabitants of Amiens. The inhabitants obtained the support of King Louis-le-Groswho sent them reinforcement. The siege lasted two years. Sibylle, Thomas's stepmother, and who did not love him (she hoped that he was disinherited by Enguerrand), betrays his son-in-law by informing the vidame Guermond. Thomas, seriously wounded in an ambush, sought revenge and executed Gautier, half-brother of Sibylle. The clergy then decided to excommunicate it in 1114 during the assembly of Beauvais. The king assaulted Thomas , removed the castles of Crépy and Nogent, and ruined the forts erected on the lands belonging to the Abbey of Saint John of Laon.
