=== The ancestry of Adalbert de Gand seems b ===
The ancestry of Adalbert de Gand seems be of great confusion. The Battle Abbey roll has him a son of Wickman (Wichmann) then turns around and says Gilbert de Gand, his grandson, is six generations removed. Several postings offer the following:
"From: "Peter E. Murray"
Subject: COUNTS OF ALOST (was: Who was King Sigferth)

I have two books by Beryl Platts which I suspect may no longer be in print (my letters to Proctor Press came back undelivered).
Platts B: Scottish Hazard - The Flemish Nobility and their Impact on Scotland (Proctor Press, London 1985).
Platts B: Origins of Heraldry (Proctor Press, London 1980).
On taking a closer look at the information on the Flemish Counts of Alost (and Ghent), as given by Beryl Platts in "Scottish Hazard", I found it to be less in the form of a genealogy than a reexamination of the contentious evidence on key individmacls, their lands and relationships, and therefore a little difficult to follow genealogically. But it does have plenty of connected genealogical information which I hope I have summarized correctly below. These are from her chapter "Origin of the Lindseys" which was apparently prepared originally at the request of the Earl of Crawford because the origin of the Lindsays in Lord Lindsay's 1849 "Lives of the Lindsays" is suspect in its early parts. Flemish origins are also
deduced by B.Platts for many other Scottish families as well, often from indirect evidence.
Wickman Ct of Hamaland (Uncle of Emp Otto I) m. Liutgard, one of three daughters of Arnulf I Ct of Flanders (the others were Hildegarde m. Theoderich Ct W.Friesland; and Elftrude
m. Siegfried the Norseman, Ct.Guines).
Wickman and Liutgard had at least one son, and possibly more. Some modern genealogists apparently concluded that they had no sons and therefore disregarded 1 and 2 below (on the grounds that the anonymous author of "The Norman People" was discredited). But this turned out to be incorrect since an unnamed son certainly died in 962 (see Rosch S: Caroli Magni Progenies p.168, pub 1977). Platts concludes that this must be 3 below.
1. Theoderich Ct of Guines.
2. Adalbert Ct of Alost.
3. A son (d.962) probably the same as the Baldwin, also thought to have d.962, who is "the first ancestor given nowadays for the lords of Alost", citing for this information both Fayen A: Liber
Traditionem Sancti Petri Blandiniensis (Ghent, 1906), and Gysseling M and Koch ACF: Diplomatica Belgica ante annum 1100 scripta" (Brussels 1950).
The connection between Baldwin and Ralph Ct of Alost who follows below is not made clear, Platts' interest being primarily in the later family relationships, and a certain amount of knowledge is assumed of the reader.
Ralph Ct of Alost m. Gisela, dau of the Ct of Luxembourg (her sister Ogive m. Baldwin
IV Ct of Flanders, grandparents of Matilda wife of Wm the Conqueror). They had 4 sons:
1. Baldwin Ct of Alost (d.1082). He is implied (i.e. reader assumed to already know) to be father of Baldwin II "the fat" slain 1097 in the 1st crusade who was father of Baldwin III slain in the
civil war in Flanders 1127 who left dtr Beatrice. Beatrice should have been his legitimate heir, but instead the county was usurped by the illegitimate Ivan and eventually Ivan's son Thierry (Dirk).
2. Gilbert de Ghent (de Lindsey), 1st Earl of Lincoln (having accompanied Wm the Conquerer to England), whose family is discussed in detail, being the main point of the chapter. He m. Alice de
Montfort (dau of Hugh Ct Montfort; sister of Hugh III Ct de Montfort whose sons Hugh and Robert perished in the 1st crusade). Their sons given as Gilbert (d.in Alost; no heirs), Hugh IV de Montfort (m. Adeline dau of E.of Leicester and had issue), Walter de Ghent (de Lindsey?; deduced to be ancestor of the Lindseys), Robert, Ralph de Linssey (m.Etheldreda of Allerdale; no heirs), Henry de Lindsey (of Norton Lindsey manor; living 1086).
3. Ralph "the Chamberlain" de Ghent or de Lindsey (b.c.1040; living c.1095). Had a son Alan in Warwickshire.
4. Ragenfridis (?or Angodus?).
The text has much discussion around all this which requires more attention than I could give it. The following sources cited by Platts seem to be the critical ones for the previously established
genealogy of this line:
Warlop E: The Flemish Nobility before 1300 (4 vol. Belgium 1968 in Flemish; English translation 1975).
Duchesne A: Histoire Genealogique des Maisons de Guines, d'Ardres, de Gand, et de Coucy (Paris, 1631).
Peter"
There, however, seems to be a flaw in this chronology, but the following posting may explain a better ancestry:

C. Counts of Ghent
4. Wichmann, Count of Ghent, d. 961, m. Liutgard of Flanders (see
A.3.d.)
a. Thierry (see #5)
b. Liutgard, Abbess of Elten
c. Adele, m1. Immed of West-Saxony, m2. Baldrich of Tubalgo
5. Thierry, Count of Ghent, d. 977
a. Arnulf I (see #6)
6. Arnulf I, Count of Ghent, d. 988
a. Thierry II (see #7)
7. Thierry II, Count of Ghent"
It looks as though both the Battle Abbey Roll and the sources listed by Peter Murry made Adalbert the brother of the wrong Thierry or Theodoric. When Adalbert and Theodoric are sons of Wichmann, the six generation descent to Gilbert de Gant mentioned by the Battle Abbey Roll turns into four. When Adalbert and Theodoric are sons of Arnulf, there is the six generation descent. In otherwords, Adalbert was made the brother of his grandfather.
