Lord of Trier
TREVES is located west of Saumur.
At the beginning of the 11th century Trier
was at the limit of the domains of the Counts of Blois (towards the east) and the Counts of Anjou (towards the west). According to legend, the village owes its name
to a truce concluded at that time between Foulques Nerra and Eudes II deBlois.
At the beginning of the 11th century, Trèves was one of the estates dependent on the Château de Saumur, whose Lord was Guelduin, a vassal of the Count of Blois. The Guardian of Treves comes from the House of Lords of Maillé (near Tours).
Before 1026 the Count of Anjou Foulques Nerra seized the place of Trèves and built a castle there. He entrusts it to Herbert le Rasoir Seigneur de Sablé then to Thibaud le Bouteiller.
Around 1060 it was Geoffroy le Fort (husband of Tichildis the sister of Hilduin I of Maillé) who settled in Trèves. He supports the new Count of Anjou Geoffroy le Barbu. His son Hardouin maintained links with the Counts of Blois and also supported Geoffroy le Barbu during the war between him and Foulques le Réchin. The castle was taken on June 19, 1068 and destroyed by Foulques le Réchin assisted by a relative of Hardouin: Aimeri. Defeated Hardouin is blinded and becomes a monk, his brother Guillaume is disinherited.
The Count of Poitou Guy-Geoffroy took
the opportunity to attack and burn Saumur shortly after June 27, 1068. Aimeri, who married Tichildis de Maillé, became Lord of Trèves.
The chateau was rebuilt by Foulques le Réchin at the end of the 11th century. In 1091 the Lord of Trèves was a relative of Aimeri, Geoffroy Fouchard, Seneschal of the Count of Anjou, who then became a monk at Saint
Florent.
He has a son Geoffroy and two daughters married to Gilbert de Loudun and Aimery d'Avoir. Geoffroy, the son, (1093-1142) is the founder of the town and its two Priories. He went on a crusade in 1102.
