Hie thee to Stewart Baldwin's "Henry Project" for scholarly research onthis person (& much more):
http://sbaldw.home.mindspring.com/hproject/henry.htm
Baldwin III ruled briefly as joint count with his father Arnulf I, butdied before his father. Count Baldwin's name appears in lists of abbotsof St. Bertin [Monumenta Germaniae Historica, Scriptores series, 13, 391,607], and he would appear to have held that office for a short periodbefore his death. [Ref: Henry Project]
Possible illegitimate son (status uncertain):
Ascelin (Azelin) or Albert de Tronchiennes, bishop of Paris, 1016-1018.
The History of the Bishops of Cambrai states that Ascelin (or Albert, ashe is called in some sources) was an illegitimate son of count Baldwin ofFlanders. [Gesta Episcoporum Cameracensium, MGH SS 7, 448]. If this isaccurate, Baldwin III would be the only count of Flanders named Baldwinwho would make a chronologically feasible father for Ascelin. [LéonVanderkindere, La Formation Territoriale des Principautes Belge au MoyenAge (2 vols., 2nd ed., Brussels, 1902, reprinted 1981) 1, 293], listsAscelin as a son of Baldwin, without citing a source, but neither ErichBrandenburg, Die Nachkommen Karls des Großen (Frankfurt, 1964) norKarlFerdinand Werner, 'Die Nachkommen Karls des Großen bis um das Jahr 1000(1.-8. Generation)', Karl der Große 4 (1967) mention him. His biographyin Dictionnaire de Biographie Française 3, 1238-40 states that he wasvery probably the son of Arnulf I, and then contradicts this statement bycalling Arnulf II a brother of Ascelin. The DBF article makes Ascelin aprovost of the monastery of Saint-Marie in Tronchiennes as early as 951,which, if true, would chronologically rule out Ascelin's affiliation as ason of Baldwin III. However, this date is suspicious, as it is 65 yearsbefore Ascelin became bishop, and the next event mentioned in thebiography is in 995. [Ref: Henry Project]
Falsely attributed daughters:
Bertha (existence doubtful), m. Aymar, count of Genève (existencedoubtful). [P. Anselme, Histoire Genealogique et Chronologique de laMaison Royale de France, ... (1726), 2, 715. She has also been falselyattached to Baldwin's father Arnulf I.]
Jeanne, mother of Wolbodo, bishop of Liège. [Léon Vanderkindere, LaFormation Territoriale des Principautes Belge au Moyen Age (2 vols., 2nded., Brussels, 1902, reprinted 1981), 1, 293, citing Meyer, RerumFlandr., 67, with a remark that the attribution is in error] [Ref: HenryProject]

Note: The count of Flanders was the ruler or sub-ruler of the county of Flanders, beginning in the 9th century.[1] The title was held for a time by the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire and Spain. During the French Revolution, in 1790, the county of Flanders was annexed to France and ceased to exist. In the 19th century, the title was appropriated by Belgium and granted twice to younger sons of Belgian kings. The most recent holder died in 1983.[2]
In 862 Baldwin I was appointed as the first Margrave of Flanders by King Charles II. It was a military appointment, responsible for repelling the Viking raids from the coast of Francia. The title of margrave (or marquis) evolved into that of count. Arnulf I was the first to name himself as count, by the Grace of God. The title of margrave largely fell out of use by the 12th century. Since then, the rulers of Flanders have only been referred to as counts.
The counts of Flanders enlarged their estate through a series of diplomatic marriages. The counties of Hainaut, Namur, Béthune, Nevers, Auxerre, Rethel, Burgundy, and Artois were all acquired in this manner. However, the County of Flanders suffered the same fate in turn. As a result of the marriage of Countess Margaret III with Philip II, Duke of Burgundy, the county and the subsidiary counties, entered a personal union with the Duchy of Burgundy in 1405.[3]
The counts of Flanders were also associated with the Duchy of Brittany prior to its union with France. In c.1323, Joan, the daughter of Arthur II, Duke of Brittany, married the second son of Count Robert III. Joanna of Flanders, the granddaughter of Count Robert III and daughter of his son, Count Louis I, married John Montfort.[4] During Montfort's imprisonment, she fought on his behalf, alongside English allies, during the Breton War of Succession for the ducal crown, which was won definitively by her son John V, Duke of Brittany. It was through this alliance that the Duchy of Brittany was eventually joined to the throne of France.[5]
