=== Life Sketch ===
He was the son of Reginar II, Count of Hainaut. He took part in the rebellion of his uncle Gilbert, Duke of Lorraine. When Gilbert was killed in 939, Reginar had to pledge fealty to King Otto the Great.[citation needed] He then allied himself with King Louis IV of France, but King Otto sent duke Hermann of Swabia to quell the rebels in 944.[1] Otto appointed Conrad the Red as duke of Lotharingia, who tried to diminish the power of Reginar. However, when Conrad rose against Otto, Reginar supported him. In an anarchic situation, Reginar appropriated the dowry of Gerberga of Saxony, Otto's sister and mother of the French king, and also church property. In 957, Bruno, Archbishop of Cologne, who had also been appointed duke of Lotharingia, restored order and defeated Reginar. As Reginar refused to submit, he was exiled to Bohemia, where he died before 973.

Reinier III , nicknamed Langhals (about 920-973) was Count of Hainaut. He was one of the most powerful nobles in Lorraine and tried unsuccessfully to acquire the position of Duke of Lorraine.
Reinier succeeded his father Reinier II in 932 as count of Henegouwen. In 939 he supported his brother Rudolf I dig in the pagi Hesbaye and the Meuse, the revolt of their uncle Duke Giselbert. After Giselbert was killed, Reinier tried unsuccessfully to take his place. In 944, Reinier and Rudolf made an alliance with Louis IV of France, but their plans were thwarted by Herman I van Swaben. Koenraad de Rode was then appointed Duke and managed to keep the rebellious brothers under control for some time. After being captured by the forces of Emperor Otto the Great, Regnier III died in exile in Bohemia, Germany.
In 951 Reinier and Rudolf were already in open conflict with Koenraad. When he later participated in the uprising of Liudolf van Zwaben against Otto I, Reinier and Rudolf naturally chose the side of the king. In the anarchy that followed, Reinier proclaimed himself the Duke of Lorraine in 954.
Reinier tried to establish his authority by force and in 955, together with his brother Rudolf, forced the appointment of their nephew Balderik I as bishop of Liège by military means .
He also plundered large-scale ecclesiastical possessions to get the means needed by an insecure duke. In the end Reinier was in conflict with France and with the church, while King Otto appointed his brother Bruno (archbishop of Cologne ) duke. In a last attempt to strengthen his position, he occupied the matrimonial property of Gerberga of Saxonywho had been married to duke Giselbert in her first marriage. That was unwise because Gerberga had become a powerful woman by her second marriage to Louis IV, and was also sister to King Otto and Duke Bruno. Reinier tried to negotiate an agreement with Bruno, but that failed when Reinier refused to give hostages. In the end, Reinier was attacked by France and Duke Bruno at the same time. When his fort was conquered at the Chiers , his family fell into the hands of his opponents. Reinier then had to stop his opposition. In 958 he and his brother Rudolf were exiled to Bohemia , where he died. His family goods were confiscated and his sons were disinherited and fled to France.
After his deposition, Hainaut was divided into the county of Bergen and the margrave of Valenciennes.
Reinier was married to Adela van Leuven (about 930-961). Reinier and Adela had two sons:
1 Reinier IV
2 Lambert I
When Comte Reginar de Hainaut III was born about 0924, in Empiré, Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France, his father, Régnier Heinaut de Lorraine II, was 44 and his mother, Adélaïde de Bourgogne, was 30. He married Adele van Leuven in 0943. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. In 932, at the age of 8, his occupation is listed as comte de hainaut, comte de hennegau, graaf van henegouwen, count of hainaut. He died about 0973, in Kleingoeft, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France, at the age of 49, and was buried in Prague, Czechia.
