Hartwig I (first documented mention 953; † June 16, 985 ) was 953-980 messenger of violence in the Carinthian Kroatengau and 977-985 Count Palatine of Bavaria.

Hartwig is generally assigned to the Aribonen clan and is also very closely related; However, according to H. Dopsch, he comes from the Hartwig-Engelbert group in the Salzburggau. His great-uncle was the Salzburg Vogt Hartwig († 925/930), a proximus (very close relative) of Archbishop Odalbert. (This ancestor of Hartwig is also the reason that Count Palatine Hartwig I is sometimes also counted as Hartwig II.)

In 953 Hartwig appears as the holder of a ministerial office in Carinthia; the madder field is in his district; here and also in western Grazer Feld and in the Laßnitztal Hartwig owned huge allodies. Around 960 Hartwig is mentioned as a count in the Isengau, in 963 in the lower Salzburggau; 965 is reported from his central Carinthian county and from his office as Walpoto. Hartwig is also considered to be the new founder of Michaelbeuern (977). From 976/977 - 976 Carinthia became independent as a duchy, but Hartwig also remained Carinthian messenger of violence - until his death around 985 he was Count Palatine of Bavaria as the successor ofBerthold von Reisensburg. He was able to pass this office on to his son-in-law Aribo I. He was also a count in the Freising area and bailiff to Archbishop Friedrich I of Salzburg.
