=== Life Sketch ===
Gerard van de Metzgau (c. 875-22 June 910 ) was Count van Metz who, together with his brother, tried unsuccessfully to acquire power over Lorraine.
Gerard came into conflict with King Zwentibold of Lorraine in 897. He first deprived him of his position but Gerard and Zwentibold reconciled again. The conflict was not resolved, however, and Gerard and his brother Matfried (count of the Eiffel) took the lead of a revolt, and defeated and killed Zwentibold in 900 in a battle at Susteren. Gerard married Zwentibold's widow Oda van Saksen (about 880-after 952), a daughter of Otto I van Saksen, but Gerard and Matfried were unable to establish their authority over Lorraine. In 903 Gebhard from Franconia was appointed Duke of Lorraine. Gerard was in conflict with a Count Koenraad in 906, presumablyKoenraad I van Franken (a nephew of Gebhard) sent by Koenraad the Elder (a brother of Gebhard) with an army to support Gebhard. Gerard was killed in 910 with a Bavarian army.
Gerard was the son of Adelhard van Metz (ca. 850-2 January 890), Count of Metz and layman of Echternach , who was the son of Adalhard de Seneschalk, and of a daughter of Matfried of the Eifelgouw (ca. 820-after September 18 882). Matfried is already mentioned in 843 as count of the Eifelgouw and in 877 he is on a list of nobles who will assist the king of West Francia if he would cross the river Maas.
«b»Gerard and Oda had the following children:«/b»

2.) Uda van Metz (905-963), married to Gozelo van de Ardennen

Oda remarried Eberhard of the Upper Lahngouw.
