=== Life Sketch ===
King Harald, one winter, went about in guest-quarters in the Uplands, and had ordered a Christmas feast to be prepared for him at the farm Thoptar. On Christmas eve came Svase to the door, just as the king went to table, and sent a message to the king to ask if he would go out with him. The king was angry at such a message, and the man who had brought it in took out with him a reply of the king's displeasure. But Svase, notwithstanding, desired that his message should be delivered a second time; adding to it, that he was the Fin whose hut the king had promised to visit, and which stood on the other side of the ridge. Now the king went out, and promised to go with him, and went over the ridge to his hut, although some of his men dissuaded him. There stood Snaefrid, the daughter of Svase, a most beautiful girl; and she filled a cup of mead for the king. But he took hold both of the cup and of her hand. Immediately it was as if a hot fire went through his body; and he wanted that very night to take her to his bed. But Svase said that should not be unless by main force, if he did not first make her his lawful wife. Now King Harald made Snaefrid his lawful wife, and loved her so passionately that he forgot his kingdom, and all that belonged to his high dignity. They had four sons: the one was Sigurd Hrise; the others Halfdan Haleg, Gudrod Ljome and Ragnvald Rettilbeine. Thereafter Snaefrid died; but her corpse never changed, but was as fresh and red as when she lived. The king sat always beside her, and thought she would come to life again. And so it went on for three years that he was sorrowing over her death, and the people over his delusion. ..."
Snefrid married Harald I Halvdansson Hårfagre (Lufa) of Norway, son of Halvdan "den Svarte" Gudrødsson and Ragnhild Sigurdsdatter. (Harald I Halvdansson Hårfagre (Lufa) of Norway was born circa 860 and died circa 940.)

=== Daughter of Svasse the Finn. Very beaut ===
Daughter of Svasse the Finn. Very beautiful. She and Harald had four sons. Mary would like to point out that 'beautiful' should be taken with a few grains of salt. To our modern eyes, a beauty of this era might not be pleasing, just the absence of small pox scars was a prime factor, add youth, shapeliness, a fine head of long hair, often blonde, flashing eyes, and charm of personality - Oh well, not so different from our own times. HARP SONG OF THE DANE WOMEN What is a woman that you forsake her, And the hearth-fire and the home-acre, To go with the old grey Widow-maker? She has no house to lay a guest in-- But one chill bed for all to rest in, That the pale suns and the stray bergs nest in. She has no strong white arms to fold you, But the ten-times-fingering weed to hold you-- Out on the rocks where the tide has rolled you. Yet, when the signs of summer thicken, And the ice breaks, and the birch-buds quicken, Yearly you turn from our side, and sicken-- Sicken again for the shouts and slaughters. You steal away to the lapping waters, And look at your ship in her winter-quarters. You forget our mirth, and talk at the tables, The kine in the shed and the horse in the stables - To pitch her sides and go over her cables. Then you drive out where the storm-clouds swallow, And the sound of your oar-blades, falling hollow, Is all we have left through the months to follow. Ah, what is Woman that you forsake her, And the hearth-fire and the home-acre, To go with the old grey Widow-maker? - Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) Mary's note: On the other side of the family, see mention of Widow's Walks built on Yarmouth houses, where the sea-captain's wives would scan the ocean for a home-coming sail.

The following post-em from Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann@yahoo.com, adds alittle more detail:
After giving birth to four sons for Harald, she died, but her corpsenever changed, but was as fresh and red as when she lived. The king satalways beside her, and thought she would come to life again. And so itwent on for three years that he was sorrowing over her death, and thepeople over his delusion.
At last Thorleif the Wise succeeded, by his prudence, in curing him ofhis delusion by accosting him thus: -- "It is nowise wonderful, king, that thou grievest over so beautiful and noble a wife, and bestowestcostly coverlets and beds of down on her corpse, as she desired; butthese honours fall short of what is due, as she still lies in the sameclothes. It would be more suitable to raise her, and change her dress."As soon as the body was raised in the bed all sorts of corruption andfoul smells came from it, and it was necessary in all haste to gather apile of wood and burn it; but before this could be done the body turnedblue, and worms, toads, newts, paddocks, and all sorts of ugly reptilescame out of it, and it sank into ashes. Now the king came to hisunderstanding again, threw the madness out of his mind, and after thatday ruled his kingdom as before. He was strengthened and made joyful byhis subjects, and his subjects by him and the country by both. [Ref:Heimskringla http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/OMACL/Heimskringla/harfager.html]

=== Early in his reign, Harald proposed marr ===
Early in his reign, Harald proposed marriage to Gyda Eiriksdatter, a beautiful noblewoman, who
refused to accept him as a husband until he had united all Norway. Harald vowed that he would
not groom his hair until he had met Gyda’s demand. His hair remained uncut and uncombed for
ten years during which he became known as “Lufa” which means “with rough, matted hair.”
Starting with Vestfold, Oppland and Viken, which he had inherited, Harald with the help of his
friend Earl Haakon Grjothardssen, conquered Trondelag. He made alliances with some of the jarls
(earls), ruthlessly waged war against others and suppressed those under his rule..
The first major sea battle in Viking ships was fought between Harald and his followers against
seven rebellious nobles at Hafr’s fjord in 872. To prevent raids on Norwegian shores, he attacked
Viking camps in Scotland and England where he formed an alliance with King Athelstan.
Many prominent and wealthy families fled Norway, often to Iceland. Trying to stem the tide,
Harald imposed an emigration tax. The sagas tell of one jarl, Herlaug, who refused to submit to
Harald, choosing rather to have himself buried alive in a funeral mound instead..
In ten years, Harald brought Norway under his rule. As he made plans to marry Gyda, his friend
Earl Ragnvald cut and dressed his hair for a feast at More–and gave him the name Harald
Harfagre (Harald Fairhair).
