=== Life Sketch ===
Roman Emperor, natural son of the East Franconian King Karlmann and Liutswinda, sister of the Nordgau Count Ernert, born around 850, inherited Bavaria and Carinthia after his father's death (880) and was elected King of East Franconia after Charlemagne's deposition (887). He took up his residence in Regensburg, defeated the Normans at Leuven in 891, but waged unsuccessful wars against the Moravian Empire of Swatopluk in 892 and 893. Called for help by Pope Formosus against Guido von Spoleto, who was seeking the imperial dignity, he made a march to Italy in 894, although he had to turn back in Piacenza because of the apostasy of the greats, but reappeared in Italy in 895 and knew the disputes between him Duke Berengar of Friuli, who cast himself out as King of Italy, and Guido's son Lambert to use the imperial dignity so skillfully that Pope Formosus crowned him Emperor on February 22, 896 in Rome, which A. had taken by storm. Busy with preparing for further combat, he fell ill and returned to Bavaria . He died on December 8th, 899 in Regensburg and was buried there (in St. Emmeram). He was followed as king by his six-year-old son Ludwig (the child). A. had two sons of a co-sleeper, Holenrada: one, Zwentibold, became King of Lorraine in 895, the other, Ratold, is regarded as the ancestor of the Counts of Meran.

When the Frankish Emperor Charles the Fat was deposed in 887, the Germans elected Arnulf to be their king and the French took Eudes. Arnulf had the favor of Pope Stephen V, who wanted him to come to Italy to take that crown and the Imperial crown as well (currently claimed by native Italian kings, Guido and son Lambert), however Arnulf was too busy repelling Danish attacks to leave his kingdom. Stephen, who was in need of help, gave the crown instead to Guido of Spoleto, King of Italy. In 893, Arnulf campaigned in Italy (inconclusive) against Guido and Lambert, and the next year Guido died. That year Arnful took the Imperial throne himself (Lambert still held the pseudo-crown until his death in 898). In 899, Arnulf died of Paralysis and was succeeded in Germany by his son Louis the Child, in Lotharingia by his son Zwentibold, and to the Imperial throne by Louis the Blind. === Arnulf (died 899), king of Germany (887 ===
Arnulf (died 899), king of Germany (887-99) and Holy Roman emperor (896-99). He was an illegitimate son of the East Frankish ruler Carloman (828-80), who was a great-grandson of Charlemagne. In 887 Arnulf led the revolt that forced Charles III (The Fat), king of France and Holy Roman emperor, to abdicate and was elected king of the East Franks, that is, of Germany. In 891 he repulsed the Vikings, who were invading his kingdom. He campaigned in Italy in 894 and again in 895-96. In early 896, he captured Rome and was crowned Holy Roman emperor, the last Carolingian to be so invested. _________________________________________________ "Arnulf," Microsoft (R) Encarta.
