=== Life Sketch ===
Umila Gostomyslovna (Russian: Умила Гостомысловна? ; Staraja Ladoga, circa 770 – ...) was a Russian noblewoman considered legendary. She was the daughter of Elder Gostomysl and mother of Rurik, progenitor of the Rurikid dynasty.
In the chronicles of the Obodrites, it is said that Godoslav married a certain Uma, with whom they had 3 equally strong and powerful children:
Rurik (Rurich)
Truvor (Truvar)
Sineus (Sivar)
Some historians say that Umila was a legendary person, others say she really existed, but the dates of birth and death are very uncertain.
In 808, when Godoslav was hanged from Reric, Umila had to take away his three children. When the brothers became adults and Umila died, they decided to travel to unknown places. Legend has it that in anticipation of death, Gostomysl, Umila's father, had a prophetic dream: as if a large tree grew from her daughter's womb, Umila, denoting a large family that will derive from her. The prophets explained that one of Umila’s sons would be his heir and “the earth would be fertilized by his kingdom.” Before his death, Gostomysl, after gathering the elders and telling them about his dream, advised them to send an embassy to the Varangians to ask the prince. Two years after Gostomysl's death in 862, Rurik and his two brothers came to Novgorod to reign.
