member of a people of the Polab group, the northwesternmost ofthe Slavsin medieval Europe. The Obodrites (sometimes calledthe Bodryci, frombodry, "brave") inhabited the lowland countrybetween the lower Elbe Riverand the Baltic Sea, the area northand northeast of Hamburg in what is nowSchleswig-Holstein Land(state), Germany. The Obodrites' independentprincipality, whichhad developed by the early 9th century, was conqueredin themiddle of the 12th century by Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony,aftera long resistance directed by its last pagan prince,Niklot (d. 1160).Niklot's son Przybyslaw (Pribislav; d.1178) accepted Christianity,acknowledged German suzerainty, andwas recognized in 1170 as a prince ofthe Holy Roman Empire.Both his descendants, who became the dukes ofMecklenburg, andthe Obodrite people eventually became Germanized.
