MALAHULC . His family origin is confirmed by Guillaume of Jumièges who names “Rogerius Toenites de stirpe Malahulcii qui Rollonis ducis patruus fuerat”[1406], suggesting that Malahulc was ancestor of the later Tosny family. Orderic Vitalis (writing in [1113]) names Malahulc as an uncle of Rollo and ancestor of the Tosny family[1407]. He is not mentioned in the Sagas.

There are a few generation jumps until Hughe de Calvacamp, begins this family tree, There are two generations missing.
Hughes - Hugo (of Cavalcamp, Calvacamp or Calvacaput,) is the son or grandson of Malahulc (Halducy de Tresny.)
Origins of the Tosny Family:
Tosny, or Tceni. Tosny is a small village on the left bank of the Seine in the canton of Gaillon and department of L'Eure, near the well-known Chateau Gaillard. The Seine at this point ' Plan in makcs a horseshoe curve ', sweeping beneath the heights of Duc's'^Dicl Les Andelys on which the chateau stands, and which look de rArch meadows enclosed by the river's bend. Within this bend a spectator from the castle would see the two villages of Bernieres and Tosny, the former on the right hand, the latter a little nearer and on the left, close to the Seine.
It is not without significance, as will shortly be seen, that in Cassini's large Atlas (1744) a place called Grange le Conches is to be found close to Tosny. The name has variations, but appears to be now fixed as Tosny. '''RAOUL [II] de Todeniaco [Tosny]''', son of RAOUL [I] [de Tosny] & his wife --- . 991/before 1024. William of Jumièges records that Richard II Duke of Normandy left "Nigel de Coutances, Raoul de Ternois, et Roger, fils de celui-ci" as guardians of the château de Tillières {Verneuil, Eure}, built in the early 1000s against Eudes Comte de Blois[1599].
m ---. The name of Raoul's wife is not known.
Raoul & his wife had [four] children:
1. ROGER [I] de Conches ([990]-killed in battle [1040]). Guillaume de Jumièges names "Roger du Ternois, de la mauvaise race de Hulce…oncle du duc Rollon, et se battant avec lui contre les Francs avait jadis concouru par sa valeur à la conquête de la Normandie", recording that Roger was "porte-bannière de toute la Normandie" and left for Spain when Duke Robert II left on pilgrimage to Jerusalem but refused to serve Duke Guillaume II on returning toNormandy[1600]. The Chronici Hugonis Floriacensis names "Rotgerius filius Rodulfi comitis" when recording that he left Normandy for Spain[1601]. The Chronico S Petri Vivi Senonensi records that "Rotgerius filius Rodulfi comitis" left Normandy for Spain with an army in 1015[1602]. He founded the abbey of Conches in 1035[1603]. He and his two sons "Helbert et Hélinant" were killed during his rebellion by "Roger de Beaumont"[1604]. "…Rogerii filii Radulfi…" witnessed the charter dated to [1030] under which Robert II Duke of Normandy donated "in comitatu Abrincatensi villam…Sancti Johannis" to the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel[1605]. He left Normandy for Spain in [1030/35], foughtagainst the Moors, and lived there for 15 years with his Spanish wife[1606]. "…Rodgerii filii Rodulfi…Rogerii de Conchis" subscribed the charter dated to [1040] under which "Vuillelmus Ricardi magni ducis Normannorum filius" donated property to the abbey of Jumièges[1607]. The apparent duplication of these names is difficult to explain. "…Nigelli vicecomitis, Tursteni vicecomitis…Willelmi Arcacensis comitis, Godefridi vicecomitis, Rodgerii filii Rodulfi, Wimundi…" witnessed the charter dated to [1040] under which Guillaume Comte de Talou donated property to Jumièges[1608].
[m firstly (1018 or soon after) ADELAIDA [Papia] de Barcelona, daughter of RAMÓN BORELL I Conde de Barcelona & his wife Ermesinde de Carcassonne.
m secondly as her first husband, GODECHILDIS, daughter of ---.
2. [BERTHE . Her marriage is confirmed by the charter dated [Sep/14 Oct] 1055 under which the monks of Marmoutier record the donations by "quemdam militem…Johannem pagi Cenomannensis indigenum, Widonis de Valle filium" ofproperty "in Normannia, territorio Vilcassino…ecclesiam in villa…Guarniacus…juxta fluvium Eptæ" which "Wido pater eorum" accepted from "uxore sua Berta, Johannis et Haimonis matre"[1620]. Her connection with the Tosny family isconfirmed by the charter dated 1063 which records the consent given by "Rotbertum de Toeniaco, avunculum domni Johanni monachi nostri, filii Widonis de Valle" to the donations by the latter to Marmoutier, authorised by "Berengerius filius eius"[1621]. The remaining question is the identity of her father. The date of her marriage is estimated from a charter dated 11 Nov 1039 in which her two grandsons are named (see the document MAINE for further details)[1622]. If this document is correctly dated (and this is open to doubt as discussed further in MAINE), Berthe could not have been the daughter of Roger [I] de Conches. There are two other possibilities. Either she was the daughter of Raoul [II] de Tosny or she was the sister of Robert de Tosny (see above), whose precise relationship with the main Tosny family has not been ascertained.
m ([1010/15]) as his first wife, GUY [I] Sire de Laval, son of --- (-after 1064).
3. [BERENGER Hespina . The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. However, his name suggests that he was the brother of Robert de Tosny whose son is also recorded with the name Berenger. 1050/1066.]
m ---. The name of Berenger's wife is not known.
4. [ROBERT (-after 1063). His connection with the Tosny family is confirmed by the charter dated 1063 which records the consent given by "Rotbertum de Toeniaco, avunculum domni Johanni monachi nostri, filii Widonis de Valle" to the donations by the latter to Marmoutier, authorised by "Berengerius filius eius"[1623]. As noted above, the chronology is unfavourable for Robert´s known sister Berthe to have been the daughter of Roger [I] de Conches. She and Robert could either have been children of Raoul [II] de Tosny or related to the other Robert de Tosny who is named above and whose connection to the main Tosny family has not been ascertained. If the latter is correct, the question then arises whether Robert, brother of Berthe, was in fact the same person as that other Robert de Tosny.
m ---. The name of Berenger's wife is not known.

Seigneur de Tosni et Conches Roger de Tosny joined with his father in the custody of the castle of Tillières in 1013/14.

Notes to Vol. 1 pp. 195-202 "p. 75 (55.) The constable Gislebert Crispin' Based on Roman de Rou, which is interspersed throughout... summary:
* Count Eudes of Chartres married Maud, the sister of Duke Richard II, and received in dowry the seigneuries of Dreux and other domains. When Maud died with no children, Richard tried to retake the city Dreux and castle of Tillières back from Eudes by force.
* He "confided his defences" to Néel de Saint-Sauveur, to Ralph, and to this son Roger de Toesny and de Couches
* Eudes of Chartres allied himself to Valeran de Meulan, Hugh Count of Maine, and a reinforcement of French troops
* Néel commanded the center, defending the main road into the castle; Ralph the right wing, and Roger the left.
* Three divisions of Eudes' troops: (1) the troops of Chartres and Blois led by Eudes, (2) those of France and Maine by Count Hugh of Maine, and (3) those of Meulan by Valeran.
* Néel's column was attacked, but with the aid of Roger's and Ralphs' forces, the Normans routed the Counts of Chartres and Meulan, causing the Count of Maine to flee. When his horse died, he disguised himself as a peasant and wasable to escape capture.
The castle of Tillières, as a gateway to Chartres and France, became "of couble consquence to [Duke] Robert," and he gave command of it to Gilbert Crispin, Lord of Bec-Crispin. Later, King Henry of France, along with a group of disaffected Norman barons, "advanced a powerful army on Dreux" to persuade Duke William to raze the fortress. Crispin, indignant, "increased the garrison of the castle" but "could not overcome the brave resistance of the beseiged, or the virtuous obstinacy of the faithful Gilbert Crispin," who had pledged to turn it over only to the Duke, which he died, and Duke William in turn delivered it to King Henry, who "enveloped it in flames." The castle was later ceded by Henry to William after the Battle of Veraville, who named Gilbert's second son, also named Gilbert, as constable in remembrance of his father's loyalty. This younger Gilbert followed Duke William to the Conquest.

RALPH (or RODULF) DE TOENI II, son and heir, was born probably before 970, for in 1013 or 1014 the Duke of Normandy, having founded the castle of Tilliéres, gave the custody of it to Ralph de Toeni and his son Roger, together withNeel, Vicomte of the Cotentin. Ralph was seigneur of Tosni and Conches. About 1015 he went to Apulia; and in the winter of 1015-16 he was at the siege of Salerno (a). The name and parentage of his wife are unknown, but it is possible that she belonged to a collateral branch of the ducal house; for according to Orderic, Ralph's son Roger descended from an alleged uncle of Rolf, the founder of Normandy (b). The date of Ralph's death is not known. [CompletePeerage XII/1:754-5, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Douglas, op. cit. p. 30, note 127. He may bethe "quidam Normannorum audacissimus, nomine Rodulfuls," who (according to Rodulf Glaber), having displeased Duke Richard, went to Rome to lay his cause before the Pope and was induced by him to got to Benevento to fight the Greeks; and after victorious campaigns returned to Normandy (Rec. des Hist. de France, vol x, pp. 25-26). According to the Sens Chron., Count Rodulf, whose son Roger fought in Spain (see p. 756, note "b" below), set out from Normandyfor Jerusalem, but when he reached Apulia was asked by the local princeps to abandon his pilgrimage and stop to fight the Greeks, which he did ("Chron. S. Petri Vivi Senonensis," in Idem, p. 223). These writers may refer to Ralphde Toeni, but the identity cannot be proved.
(b) . . . de Stirpe Malahulcii, qui Rollonis patruus fuerat (Will. de Jumieges, p. 157--interpoations by Orderic). An alternative reading is "de stirpe mala Hulcii" (Rec. des Hist. de France, vol xi, p. 38); whence he is called "Hulce" by the Vicomte du Motey, Origines de la Normandie, p. 55, note 4 and p. 173. Nothing is known of Rolf's alleged uncle under either name. If he really existed, the alleged descent might be through the unknown wife of theelder Ralph.

No source has been found which names him in his own capacity. Guillaume of Jumièges names [his great-grandson] “Rogerius Toenites de stirpe Malahulcii qui Rollonis ducis patruus fuerat”[1409], which suggests that Malahulc was the ancestor of Hugues de Calvacamp, Hugues’s wife, or the wife of Raoul [I] de Tosny. m ---. The dates of his appointment and death are ascertained from Orderic Vitalis who records the death of his predecessor in 942, and that Hugues held the position for 47 years[1415]. Gallia Christiana records the death "IV Id Nov" of "Hugonis archiepiscopi"[1416]. [m ---.] Hugues [& his wife] had children:
