=== Life Sketch ===
Gostomysl of Novgorod (Lake Il'men', circa 760 – Veliky Novgorod, 860) legendary elder or prince of the Slavs of Ilmen, whose name is associated, according to some chronicles, with the legendary deeds of Rurik.
Ancestry:
In the Chronicles of Joachim, presented by Tatishev, there is information about the origin of Gostomysl from the ancient Slavic princely family, dating back to the legendary Slavic leaders Slaven, Vandal and Vladimir. Buryvoj, Gostomysl's father fought with the Vikings in the Baltic. Moved from his homeland, Buryvoj, along with his relatives and subordinate princes, stayed on an island in the town of Bjarma. The Varangians captured the Great City and imposed a heavy tribute on the Slavs, Rus' and Chuds. The inhabitants of the Great City turned to Buryvoy with a request to send them their son Gostomysl, who, once he arrived, took power, took revenge on the Varangians refusing to pay tribute to the invaders. After concluding a peace agreement with them, Gostomysl built a town near the sea, naming it after his eldest son, Vybor.
In some sources Gostomysl’s grandfather – rabr, who probably could have been Buryvoj’s father is mentioned.
Descent:
860: The death of Gostomysl
Gostomysl had four sons and three daughters:
Miecislaus the Vandal (about 833-?)
Sloven the Lesser (831-before 844)
Vybor (829-843)
a son (?-833/837)
Umila (circa 790-835/844), mother of Rjurik Sineus and Truvor
Rogana (811-after 860), who married Izborsk and had two sons Vadim and Olga
Miloslava (circa 785-after 860), who married Rastislav had a son, Gorazd.
Gostomysl's daughters married the neighboring Knijnaz princes. Some of the male children died of natural death or disease, others at war. Therefore, so there was no longer any descendant to inherit the crown. But once, in a dream, Gostomysl saw how from Umila's womb grew a large and prolific tree, covering the entire Great City of Novogorod, from whose fruits all the people of his land were satisfied. Gostomysl asked the sages to interpret his dream. They said that the sons of Umila would be the heirs to the throne and bring prosperity to his land. Before his death, Gostomysl gathered the elders of the Slavic peoples, Rus', Chuds, Vesi, Merya, Kriviči, Dregovči and Drevljani, telling them about his dream. In 860 Gostomysl died, and only two years later his grandchildren were born in Novgorod.
According to the chronicles, the prince of Novgorod, Gostomysl, was a very brave man, a wise man and a sovereign. His subjects were deeply respected and honored by him, for he was a great judge, and the neighbors, fearing war with him, sent him gifts and tributes. Many foreign rulers came by sea and land to hear his judgment, ask him for advice, "taste his wisdom."
