  Primer conde de Cea (c. 950 – c. 955)
  Bermudo Núñez hace su primera aparición documental el 10 de mayo del 921 en una donación al monasterio de Sahagún.1 Bermudo Núñez, junto a su hermano Oveco Núñez, obispo de León (c. 927-950), parecen formar parte de la corte leonesa a tenor de su presencia en varios diplomas reales.
  
  El 22 de abril del 932 aparece (Uirmundus Nunniz) confirmando junto a Ramiro II de León una donación del presbítero Pascale y su madre Coreiscia a la catedral de León;2 y en el 937 confirma una donación del propio rey Ramiro al monasterio de Sahagún.3 El 25 de junio del 938 firma en la resolución judicial de una disputa entre el monasterio de Valdevimbre y un tal Gondemaro por un acueducto y unos molinos.
  
  Matrimonios y descendencia de Bermudo Núñez
  El conde Bermudo Núñez contrajo dos matrimonios.​ Con su primera mujer, Argilo, de filiación desconocida, aparece casado en el documento del 16 de marzo del 946 antes mencionado. Tuvieron los siguientes hijos confirmados documentalmente:
  
  Froiloba Bermúdez, posiblemente la primogénita, que se casó antes de 947 con el magnate leonés Muño Flaínez.
  Fernando Bermúdez, segundo conde de Cea.
  Piniolo Bermúdez, quien confirma, junto con sus hermanos Fernando y Jimena la dotación hecha por su padre el 13 de agosto de 949 al monasterio de Santiago de Valdávida.​

  ¿Tructino Bermúdez? Aparece en un documento del 8 de enero de 978 junto a Fernando Bermúdez.
  Torres sugiere otros posibles hijos de Bermudo Núñez: Vela Bermúdez y Munio Bermúdez.
  
  Argilo debió de haber fallecido en algún momento entre los años 946 y 949. Bermudo Núñez contrajo un segundo matrimonio con Velasquita, entre 947 y 949. Según Salazar y Acha tuvo con ella probablemente otros dos hijos que aparecen en un documento del 25 de agosto del 976:​ Álvar Bermúdez y Oveco Bermúdez. Sin embargo no existe confirmación documental de esta filiación.
  
  Por último Álvarez Palenzuela sugiere que tuvo otro hijo llamado Gonzalo Vermúdez.19
  
  Origins
  
  Although his filiation has not been confirmed, several hypotheses have been put forward. Medievalist scholar Margarita Torres Sevilla-Quiñones de León believes that he could have been the son of Nuño Ordóñez, a son of King Ordoño I of Asturias and brother of Alfonso III,[3] which, according to the author, would explain the rapid rise of this lineage and its proximity to the royal house.
  
  According to another hypothesis, proposed by genealogist Jaime de Salazar y Acha, Bermudo would have been the son of a Nuño Vélaz (or Vela), a son of Vela Jiménez, Count of Álava, through whom the Vela lineage spread throughout the Kingdom of León which would also explain the Basque-Navarrese names in subsequent generations.[4][a]
  
  Bishop Oveco Núñez in a charter dated 28 August 945, confirms several donations made by King Ramiro II of León to the Monastery of Sahagún, also confirming the charter his brothers Vela, Suero, Munio, Bermudo and Nuño Núñez, followed by some of the children of these brothers, including Fernando Bermúdez, son of Bermudo Núñez.[6] He also had a sister named Gontrodo who married Ansur Fernández, Count of Monzón, the parents of Queen Teresa Ansúrez, wife of King Sancho I of León.[7]
