Werd de Jonghe genoemd. In 1844 werd hij door zijn vader in Italie als koning geinstalleerd en werd datzelfde jaar in Rome door Paus Serge II tot koning gezalfd. In 850 werd hij door zijn vader in de keizerlijke waardigheid verheven en werd in april als zodanig gekroond door Paus Leon IV te Rome. Alles wees erop dat hij in de voetsporen van zijn vader zou treden. Na de dood van zijn vader eiste hij een deel van Francië op. De drir broers, zoons van Lodewijk De Vrome, kwamen uiteindelij op een akkoord over de verdeling van de koninkrijken.

He was sent to Italy as king in 844, crowned in Rome in 844 as LOUIS King of Italy by Pope Sergius II. He was crowned joint Emperor LOUIS II, reigning jointly with his father, at Rome in Apr 850 by Pope Leo IV. He was sole emperor in 855 after the death of his father.

When Louis I partitioned his empire in 843 Louis received East Francia. With his brothers Lothair I and Pepin I of Aquitaine he waged a war against his father upon the partition of the empire, notably the share granted to their young half-brother Charles the Bald.
