=== Life Sketch ===
The Montgomery clan originated with a Viking named Gormeric, who settled on a hilltop estate in Normandy called Mount Gomeric.
In 911 AD a Viking "Rollo" signed the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, a foundational document of the Duchy of Normandy, establishing Rollo as the first Duke of Normandy in exchange for his loyalty to the king of West Francia, King Charles III, (For his part, Rollo agreed to defend the territory from other Vikings, and that he and his men would convert to Christianity.)
About this same time, Gomeric settled in the Calvados area of Normandy and fortified a hill —which became known as Mount Gomeric, or Mont Gommeri or Mons Gomerici— which gave the Montgomery family its surname.
The Montgomery name spread to England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland as a result of the Norman Conquest in 1066.
A descendant of Gomeric, Roger de Montgomerie (who an advisor to William the Conqueror) was given the titles of Earl of Chichester, Arundel and Shrewsbury after his arrival in England. He owned over 100 manors, most of Shropshire, took 3 per cent of the country’s GDP, and also had a county in Wales (Montgomeryshire) named after him.
The Montgomery name spread to England and Wales (and later Scotland and Ireland) as a result of the Norman Conquest in 1066.
About 1160 AD, Robert Montgomery (the grandson of the above-mentioned Roger de Montgomerie) became the first of the Montgomery family in Scotland, who along with two younger brothers, went north with Walter Fitzalan, the first High Steward of Scotland, in the reign of David I. In 1165, Robert de Montgomery received a grant of the manor of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire, Scotland, which his descendants owned for seven centuries.
