  === Life Sketch ===
  Suppo I (or Suppone) (died 5 March 824) was a Frankish nobleman who held lands in the Regnum Italicum in the early ninth century.
  
  In 817, he was made Count of Brescia, Parma, Piacenza, Modena, and Bergamo. He was also made a missus dominicus, along with the Brescian bishop Ratald, for Italy. In 818, he was instrumental in putting down the rebellion of Bernard against the Emperor, Louis the Pious. In 822, after the abdication and death of Duke Winiges, Suppo was created Duke of Spoleto by the grateful emperor and he passed Brescia to his son Mauring. Suppo's death was recorded by Einhard and Spoleto went to Adelard, who died within five months, leaving the duchy to Mauring, Duke of Spoleto.
  
  Suppo probably had a Lombard wife, for his second son was named Adelchis.

  Nach salfränkischen Recht lebendes Adelsgeschlecht, dessen Angehörige im 9. und in der 1. Hälfte des 10. Jh. zeitweise die Grafschaften Brescia, Parma, Piacenza, Modena, Bergamo und das Herzogtum Spoleto verwalteten, vornehmlich im Gebiet um Parma reich begütert waren und engste Kontakte zu Königen und Kaisern unterhielten. Die Grundlagen hierfür legte Graf Suppo I. von Brescia, der 814 als Pfalzgraf fungierte, 817 die Konspiration König Bernhards gegen Kaiser LUDWIG DEN FROMMEN aufdeckte und 822-824 Herzog von Spoleto war. Über seine mutmaßlichen Söhne Graf Mauring von Brescia (+ 824 als designierter Herzog von Spoelto) und Graf Adalgis I. von Parma (+ nach 861) pflanzte sich das Geschlecht fort.
  
  SUPPO I war Graf von Brescia und übernahm 822 nach dem Ausscheiden des dux Spoletinus Winigius den Dukat von Spoleto [1 Ann. regni Franc. ad. 822, Seite 158. - Von dieser Tätigkeit in Spoleto ist nichts bekannt, doch scheinen dieser Zeit die vier in einer Urkunde LUDWIGS DES FROMMEN vom 1. April 831 erwähnten und in Gegenwart eines Grafen Suppo erlassenen Gerichtsurteile gegen 24 Leute anzugehören, welche sich ihren Dienstverpflichtungen in der Villa Trita entziehen wollten; BM² nr. 887 = Chron. Vulturnense I Seite 289. Manaresi, I placii Seite 598 möchte, da Suppo im Diplom LUDWIGS nur comes, nicht dux, genannt sei, diese Placita in die Zeit vor 822 setzen. Zum Schwanken der Titular vgl. jedoch schon A. Hofmeister, Markgrafen Seite 225.]. Bereits unter KARL DEM GROSSEN hatte er das Pfalzgrafenamt für einige Zeit bekleidet [2 Manaresi, I placiti Seite 85, nr. 28 (= Regesto di Farfa II Seite 168, nr. 224) - 814/Februar; vgl. dazu H. Meyer, Die Pfalzgrafen Seite 460.]. - Im Jahre 817 verständigte er zusammen mit dem Bischof Ratold von Verona LUDWIGDEN FROMMEN von der Verschwörung König Bernhards von Italien und erwarb sich damit ein hohes Ansehen [3 Vita Hludov. c. 29, MG SS II Seite 623.]. - Suppo I. verstarb im Jahre 824 [4 Ann. regni Franc. ad 824, Seite 164.]. Von ihm scheinen die in der 2. Hälfte des 9. und Anfang des 10. Jahrhunderts vielfach genannten Grafen mit Namen Suppo abzustammen [5 Vgl. Exkurs Suppondengenealogie.]. Er müßte demnach Salfranke gewesen sein.
