"Carolingian Margraves in the Southeast."
Count Gerold connected himself by clever marriage policy with a family which had a special position of power in Alemannia in the 1st half of the 8th century. He was of Frankish descent.
Together with his wife Imma, he donated rich estates in the Worms, Lobden, Anglach, Uff and Krainachgau to the Lorsch monastery in 784. The estates were mainly located between Worms and Oppenheim and between Heidelberg and Bruchsal. Gerold's district included the Kraich- and Anglachgau. He already penetrated into Alemannia. From 779 to 783 he exercised countly functions in the northern part of the Westbaar. Perhaps he also acquired property in Alsace. However, his rights in Alemannia are certainly not exclusively due to his marriage with Imma. Certainly the imperial power facilitated his penetration into the Alemannic area, as it did for many other Frankish greats. Count Gerold probably died shortly after 784.

V.3, Summary
Count Gerold becomes comprehensible through the documentary tradition of the Lorsch monastery as an important landlord, especially in the Middle Rhine area. On July 1, 784, Geroldus et coniux mea Imma gave the imperial abbey extensive estates in the Wormsgau, Lobdengau, Anglachgau, Kraichgau and Uffgau (CL II no. 1 880; cf. Gensicke, Worms-, Speyer- und Nabegau 474f.; Schaab, Lobdengau 565,567; Dens., Kraichgau 597; Dens., Rheinebene 586).
Geroldus comes and his wife Imma had already given Kraichgau property to the Nazarius monastery earlier, on June 30, 779 (CL III no. 2310, cf. Schaag, Kraichgau 594); the following day, July 1, 779, is the date of a document that names Count Gerold alone as donor in the Anglachgau (CL III no. 2503). The Lorsch tradition notes nos. 3617 and 3289 lead into the field of vision of this work. The former of them, issued on a 22.8. of the years 779 to 783, states that Isenhart gave in ducatu Alemannorum in uilla Giselstedem, quidquid Geroldus comes ibidem habere uisus est. This is probably partly the execution of the donation by Geroldus (...) in pago Alemannorum in Reistodinger marca et in Giselsteder marca recorded in the other document (cf. Seiler, Nördliches Württemberg 628,633 A. 25). Gerold's carta bears the date of May 27, 777 and may therefore certainly refer to Count Gerold, who is also documented in 779.
By the Lorsch documents 3617 and 3289 Gerold is by no means proven to be a count's official administrator in Alemannia; nevertheless, one may not exclude count's rights in the area of Gültstein (map in Borgolte, commentary: M 5) and in the Mark of Reistingen near Herrenberg (this M 5, cf. Gockel 289).
Another Lorsch document seems to prove Gerold, the count's landlord in Alemannia, as administrator of a comitat. According to CL III No. 3637 Wanfrit gave goods in Glatten (map in Borgolte, commentary: 17) and Dornstetten (16), which are explicitly located in Waltgouue in comitatu Geroldi (for the formula: Dietrich, Traditionsnotiz, bes. 289f.). The document was issued in 779-83 (April 18) and refers to properties southeast of Gültstein. With the count in the Waldgau Gerold could be meant. Art. Gerold II).
Dornstetten, which was mentioned next to Glatten as a Waldgau place, was localized in other documents from the same time also in the Dorn-, Nagold- and Westergau as well as in the Bertoldsbaar (Borgolte, Geschichte der Grafschaften Alemanniens 129). Contrary to the assumption of the older research (Baumann, Gaugrafschaften 136ff., cf. Jänichen, Baar und Huntari 97, Schulze 106,116f.,204 A. 194) - cannot be deduced; the comitat of Gerold, in which Glatten and Dornstetten were located as well as in the Waldgau, cannot be described exactly, because in the sources for the north of the Bertoldsbaar only very few counts are handed down (Borgolte, Geschichte der Grafschaften Alemanniens, ch. V. 3).
The younger Gerold (II) handed down property to the Lake Constance abbeys of Reichenau and St. Gallen before the end of the 8th century, some of which was located on the Neckarbogen near Horb, i.e. near Glatten and Dornstetten. A document issued by Gerold (II) was signed by Imma genetrix. The research therefore rightly considers Gerold as the father of the Reichenau and St. Gallen benefactor (first Leichtlen, cf. Stälin; then Knapp and - fundamental for the newer research - Glöckner). With Imma is equated the mother of queen Hildegart, the daughter of Nebis, mentioned by Thegan (Vita Hludowici 590 f. cap. 2); since Hildegart was probably born in 757 (Abel-Simson, Jbb. Karl der Große I 449 with A. 3), the marriage of Imma with the magnate of the Middle Rhine must fall into the 50-ies. As further children of Imma count Udalrich (I) and Voto are secured. One of Imma's brothers was Count Ruadbert (I).
Besides Hildegart, Gerold (II), Udalrich (I) and Voto, one has repeatedly tried to infer further children of Gerold and Imma. Between 784 and 795, perhaps on 25.10.790 (so Gockel 243 with A. 183), Megingoz in Malsch near Wiesloch and in Rohrbach near Heidelberg gave Giiter to the Nazarius monastery, which genitor meus Geroldus dereliquit in the morning (CL II No. 791); Megingoz could have been identical with Meingoz, who in 801 transferred his share of the Lambert basilica in Mainz, inherited from his brother Gerholt, to Lorsch (CL II No. 1974). As a landowner in the Rhine-Main area and as son of an older and brother of a younger Gerold, Megingoz would fit into the generation of Gerold (II) (cf. Gockel 243f.; Mitterauer 16; Schmid 10). If the assignment of Megingoz is correct, one gains a terminus ante quem for the death of Gerold. Already in July 793 Adrianus filius Geroldi (...) issued pro anima Erbionis germani mei for Lorsch a deed of donation of properties in Flonheim near Alzcy, which he had received as traditum Erbios (CL II no. 936). Adrian and his brother are regarded on the basis of this document as further sons (presumably Dietrich, Konradiner 302f., Schmid 1O) or as grandsons of Gerold (Mitterauer 11,13). For the first solution could speak that Gerold (II) according to Walahfrid Strabo, who probably refers to the time of death (799), had neither children nor heirs, but the research believes at least of Erbio, he still lived in the 9th century (Gockel 245f., Miterauer 13 f.)

=== Founder of the family of the Udalrichians ===
Gerold of Vinzgouw (also Vintzgau or Anglachgau; c. 725 – 799) was an Alamannian nobleman, serving the Frankish King as Margrave of the Avarian March and Prefect of Bavaria. Gerold played a significant role in the integration of Bavaria into the Frankish Kingdom. Being related to the family of the Agilofings, he was appointed Prefect of Bavaria after the deposition of Duke Tassilo III in 788. In 784 generous donations to the monastery of Lorsch by Gerold and Emma are recorded.
In 799 he fell in a battle against the Avars, a short while after his son Eric was killed by the treachery of the same. He was succeeded by his surviving sons Gerold II and Udalrich I.
Marriage and issue
In 757, he married Emma of Alamannia (730–789), daughter of Hnabi, Duke of Alamannia. They had the following:
• Eric of Friuli
• Adrian, Count of Orléans, father of Odo I, Count of Orléans
• Gerold
• Udalrich
• Hildegard, who in 771 married King Charlemagne.
Through Udalrich, Gerold is reckoned as the founder of the family of the Udalrichians.

The region was known in ancient times as Alamanni in the 5th century. In the 10th century it was raised into a duchy which continued in the House of Hohenstaufen until 1268. In 1488 the famous Swabian League was formed. In 1512 the emperor, Maximilian I, made Swabia one of the 10 circles into which Germany was divided, and enlarged its territory. - Title: Gerold von Anglachgau

- Title: Udalrichinger Dynasty
Author: The Udalrichinger were a Frankish-Alemannic noble family based in Bregenz and Winterthur, which existed from the 8th to the 11th century. They were named after Count Udalrich I, son of Gerold von Anglachgau and brother of Hildegard, wife of Charlemagne. These belonged to the imperial nobility, were propertied in the Lake Constance area since the second half of the 8th century and gained great influence there. They owned counties in Alp-, Breis-, Thur-, Linz-, Argen- and Hegau. Their opponents were the Hunfridinger, who ruled in Rhaetia. The attempt of the Udalrichingians to conquer this area failed despite royal approval. Around 839 they lost large parts of their counties at Lake Constance to the Guelphs, but regained them in 854 and even extended their rule to Pannonia, the Klett, the Nibel and the Rheingau due to the good relationship with the Carolingians. Around 1040 the dynasty divided into the three lines Buchhorn, Bregenz and Pfullendorf.
