=== Life Sketch ===
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liutfrid,_Duke_of_Alsace
Liutfrid (GQ63-3MP), died probably 742, also spelled Leodefred, Leudefred, or Leudefrid, was the Duke of Alsace, the third in a line of Etichonid dukes dating back to circa 670 [1]. He succeeded his father Adalbert in 723.
In the 720s he made his younger brother Eberhard count of the Sundgau. He made his court at Strasbourg, where he patronised the monastery of Weißenburg in seven separate donations between 734 and his death. Liutfrid was on good terms with the bishop of Strasbourg, Heddo, a partisan of Charles Martel. Liutfrid probably supported Charles Martel in his wars with the Alemanni across the Rhine. He disappears from the records in 742, along with his son Hildfrid, and presumably they died fighting for the Carolingians, for their last charter is dated to the first year of the reign of Carloman, son of Charles Martel.[2] No duke was appointed to succeed the heirless Liutfrid (GQ63-3MP). He had two wives, probably both Alsatian: Hiltrude and Theutila.[1].
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luitfried

ABBR European Heraldry #2 Crests by Arnaud Bunel
TITL "Hřaldique europěnne"
AUTH Arnaud Bunel
PUBL Coats of Arms for European Royalty and Nobility (http://www.heraldique-europeenne.org, Arnaud Bunel, 1998) , Internet
"Armigerous" (ahr-MIJ-ehr-us) adjective
Bearing or entitled to bear heraldic arms.
The reason the notion of a family crest was brought into the language was that those who were armigerous (entitled to bear arms) used to put their crest or achievement (the full coat of arms) on
their carriage, silver, etc. The stationers thought this an excellent way to sell more stationary and, in Victorian times, encouraged everybody, whether armigerous or not, to buy stationary with
their "family crest" on it. There was no such thing of course and they used to sell it (and some still do) on the basis that "someone in your family or someone having the same surname as you was
once granted this crest - as part of their achievement. Thereby they sold more stationery. And engravers flourished. The Heralds, meanwhile, lost a bit of business as their services (awarding
coats with variations because no two people can have the same coat) were less sought after.
The Shields used are family Logos, each individual with armigerous rights had individual full coats of arms to reflect their personal achievements.

His family
As the oldest son, Luitfrid succeeded his father Adalbert d'Alsace in 722 . He is the grandson of Etichon-Adalric d'Alsace , the nephew of Saint Odile 2 and the brother of Eugénie d'Alsace .
Adalbert, his father, built the royal residence of Koenigshoffen and the abbeys of Honau and Saint-Étienne of Strasbourg , but also the monastery of Wissembourg 3 . His parents, Adalbert d'Alsace and Gerlinde de Pfalzel are buried in the Saint-Etienne abbey .
Biography
His youth
Mosaic representing his grandfather Etichon-Adalric from Alsace .
Luitfrid I er d'Alsace was perhaps born in the royal residence of Koenigshoffen , where he spent a good part of his childhood. Alsace was a very powerful duchy within Austrasia in 722 , when he succeeded his father. He is very young.
The territory holds Luitfrid I st Alsace seems to have been cut or enlarged compared to the dukedom of his father. It is located east of the Vosges ridges, from Saint-Arbogast Abbey in Surbourg , south of the Sauer (river) , to the south of Moutier-Grandval Abbey . According to a diploma of the emperor Lothaire I er dating from 849 4 , located in the north of the Jura . It includes Brisgau and part of the Rhine plain on the other side of the Rhine.
In the early 720, Luitfrid I st Alsace is his younger brother Eberhard Count of Sundgau . But, despite the claims of two historians, Eberhard was never a duke. Luitfrid I er d'Alsace is constantly called duke of Alsace in the diplomas of 722 , 725 , 728 , and 730 , while his brother signs them with him only as count and domesticus regís 5 .
We know when he becomes duke, it is after the signature of a charter of the donation made in 722 to the abbey of Honau. In a patent granted around 725 to this monastery, Thierry IV , king of the Franks , gives it the same title Luitfrido duci . This prince also addressed to him in the year 724 , at the viro illustri Luthfrido , the privilege of confirmation of the abbey of Marmoutier , in Alsace, in which he qualified him as an illustrious man . He signs as Duke 6 .
His marriage
Luitfrid I er d'Alsace married twice, probably with Alsatians : Hiltrudis (Hiltrude) and Theutila.
The monasteries
Luitfrid I er of Alsace, continues the policy of its ancestors and develops the monasteries of Honau, Wissembourg , and the abbey of Mourbach 3 . He installed his court in Strasbourg , where he sponsored the monastery of Wissembourg in seven donations between 734 and his death. He considerably endowed the convents founded by his family 5 . In 742 , the Duke Luitfrid I st Alsace, donated to the abbey of four farms Heconheim, Hegeney .
Luitfrid is on good terms with Bishop Heddo of Strasbourg (734-after 760), a supporter of Charles Martel .
A supporter of Charles Martel
Charles Martel , the winner of the Saracens at the Battle of Poitiers (732) , also had to fight on the other side of the Rhine, with the help of Luitfrid I of Alsace.
Luitfrid was probably a supporter of Charles Martel , in his wars in the countries located east of the Rhine (around 719 - c. 746 ) which he reconquered or defended against enemy incursions in the kingdom of the Franks and their allies. Luitfrid quietly governs Alsace 5 .
Luitfrid disappears in the files in 742 , with his son Hildfrid, for their last charter which is dated from the first year of the reign of Carloman (son of Charles Martel) . Presumably, they died fighting against the Carolingians who want to seize the duchy of Alsace, a kind of thanks for their loyalty! It is possible that Luitfrid lose its ducal dignity from 730 , or at least he was alive seven .
Wasenburg Castle
Main article: Wasenburg castle .
We find in the year 1842 , in the public collection offered to the abbey church of Wissembourg , two documents which relate to the castle of Wasenburg. In one of them, in the year 730 , Duke Luitfrid I st of Alsace and his wife Hiltrudis speak of a promise made in the forest Fasenburg , the abbot of Ermoald Wissembourg . In this document, it is only payment of rent taxes, of nine serfs of Gœrsdorf and Preuschdorf , who were sold by Adalbert, the father of Luitfrid I erfrom Alsace, for his salute to the cloister of Saint-Pierre in Wissembourg. In any case, Father Ermoald comes to hunt with Duke Luitfrid.
This very precious document dated 733 in Strasbourg is one of the oldest historical testimonies. Before the middle of the viii th century , there was already a forest called Fasenburg and since castle speaks in the property of the Dukes of Alsace.
The Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines valley
Main article: Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines .
A statue of Fulrad in Lièpvre .
Luitfrid I st Alsace, Duke of Alsace , as in all Alsace owns land in the valley of Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines , the Small Rombach , who then passed to his son Luitfrid II. But the death of Luitfrid I st Alsace, Pepin disgraced members etichonids and divides Alsace in two counties, the Nordgau and Sundgau .
Riculfe, count of Alsace , a fairly important Frankish character , father of Father Fulrad de Saint-Denis receives immense land confiscated from the Etichonids in Kintzheim near Alsace . In 750 , Fulrad began construction of a road linking the Lorraine to Alsace that passes through the Small Rombach , on land belonging to Count Luitfrid I st of Alsace with the approval of Pepin the Short. These lands belonging to the Etichonids will remain in their domain.
Progeny
Luitfrid I er d'Alsace wife: Hiltrudis (Hildewinde) born in 705. They have two children:
Rhutard de Nordgau , count of pagus septentrionalis which includes most of Lower Alsace to Lauter and Ortenau , on the right bank of the Rhine. He marries Hirmensinde. He is called duke as son of duke, according to the ordinary courtesy of these times. He founded and endowed several abbeys especially those of Gengenbach and Schwarzach (Baden-Württemberg) and died onJanuary 28, 765, without children, which commits him to bequeath the march from Ettenheim (Baden-Württemberg) to the bishopric of Strasbourg . He is buried in Gengenbach, with Hirmesinde, his wife 8 .
Luitfrid II de Sundgau (around 745-800), count of Sundgau .
