This county was born in the Kingdom of the Visigoths. This people has been established in Septimania since 412, the County is more precisely part of the Marquisate of Gothia attested in 759. It is here that part of the Visigothic aristocracy remained after the conquest of their Empire by the Franks, having had Toulouse, in 507. The Marquisate of Gothia, a very vast territory at the time, included most of the diocese of Narbonne, those of Elne, Béziers, Agde, Lodève, Maguelone and Nîmes. The most influential Lords at the time in Septimania were the Counts of Toulouse. Titled both Princes or Marquis of Gothia, they then hold sovereignty over the Counties of Carcassone and Razes, they hold large territories in Aquitaine such as the Counties of Albigeois-Lautrec, Rouergue and Querci. The Counts of Toulouse are then loyal to the King of West Francia Charles the Simple. It is at the same time that we find the first written trace of the Counts of Melgueil and Substantion, linked to the Bishops of Maguelone, but having created a secular and hereditary branch: Guillemone de Melgueil, wife of Robert de Magalona, certainly cousins, names his son Bernard in his will. Bernard is therefore the first known Count of Melgueil or Substantion. It was Bernard's grandson, Bernard II, who made a donation to his vassal, Guillaume, of the lands of Montpellier, a donation which he underlines: ""according to the Salic law which is mine": Although of Visigothic origin , this family had thus adopted from the second hereditary generation the Franc way of life assimilating into medieval Lords answering to the same rules and laws as their powerful neighbors . The lay representatives of this powerful dynasty, the hereditary Melgueils, first called de Substantion, descended from Aygulf I Count of Maguelone in 750 and father of Saint Benedict of Aniane (750-821). It was with Guillemone de Melgueil, mother of the first hereditary Count, that the family settled in Mauguio, very close to Maguelone, where the Cathedral and the Port still exist, in the middle of fertile land irrigated by nearby ponds. They build a feudal motte, overhung by a dungeon to keep control over the surroundings. Around it, below, the peasants come to build their houses and thus constitute the farmyard; the borough is built in a circular way, and it is by admiring the city from the sky, that even today we note an important city, which knew how to equip itself with ramparts. Like some other great medieval lords, those of Melgueil will usurp the right to coin money, a right which was reserved for the king. Their wealth will come mainly from the trade they undertake with the East thanks to the Port of Maguelone. Their currency, the highly rated "Melgorian denarius", quickly spread throughout the county and beyond. This very particular monetary situation made the heyday of money changers who flocked to the region and allowed a nearby town, located on the way to Saint Jacques de Compostela, to develop: Montpellier. The discovery of silver mines allowed the Counts to keep a strong currency and the House of Melgueil took advantage of its relations with the houses of Toulouse, Auvergne and Montpellier to bind alliances and surround themselves with pomp. The castle of the medieval mound no longer suiting the aspirations of the family, in the 11th century and strong in their wealth, the Counts of Melgueil undertook the construction of another castle, this one located in the urban core. Today, nothing remains of the medieval castle of the Counts of Melgueil, in Mauguio. It is later, with Count Pierre I, that the County will lose its grandeur and that the family will die out, leaving the County in the hands of the powerful families of the surroundings. Pierre de Melgueil gradually relinquishes his rights, his property, renounces his privileges and in 1085 will donate the bishopric of Maguelone and its County to the Pontifical Church in order to ensure the salvation of his soul. The Dynasty then assimilated to that of the Guilhems of Montpellier, then passed into the Titles of the House of the Counts of Provence and Barcelona in the person of Bérenguer-Raymond I, and finally into that of the powerful house of Toulouse in the person of Raymond IV of Saint-Gilles who married Douce de Provence who had inherited all the County, and that, before becoming an integral part of the Kingdom of France. The Dynasty of the Guilhems of Montpellier: https://laseigneuriedemontpellier.org/2016/05/13/la-dynastie-des-guilhems-de-montpellier/ Historians first thought that the Guilhems were part of this class of vassals who tried to rise to the rank of aristocracy by marriage or allegiance, and therefore placed the donation of the Counts of Melgueil of the lands of Montpellier to Guilhem I at the simple reward rank. However, Claudie Duhamel-Amado sheds light on the lineage of this family that we discover to be part of the Guilhelmides. The Guilhelmides are part of the Frankish aristocracy of the 8th and 10th centuries, established at the same time in Septimania. This Family engendered great lineages such as the Princes of Orange, a branch of which is still today Sovereigns of the Netherlands, but also many famous people and in particular, pride of the Dynasty, the great Saint Guillaume de Gellone. We have traces of the father of Guilhem I, who certainly acquired the notoriety of the family with the Counts of Melgueil: ""Gui, married in Engelrade"" Some sources lead us to believe that the latter is a daughter of the Melgueil family, which would legitimize the donation of the lands of Montpellier to their son Guilhem I by the Counts of Melgueil in 985. They will have an eldest daughter, Trudgarde, then three sons including Guilhem I born in 955, Bérenger and Pierre. Sources Individual, family: Geneanet Lucette DHUICQUE (lu777)
