John Sauer, the first son and third child of Philip and Christianna Faust Sauer was born mar 20 1760 and his Godparents were John Cuch and sister, Maria Julianna. When he was a lad of 15 or 16, he joined the Revolutionary War. He was a privat in the North Carolina Troops, havingenlisted in July 1776 at the age of sixteen. He was in a skirmish with the Tories on August 1, 1781. Once when he fell sick while camped not far from his father's home, he was allowed to go home and be nursedback to health. He was with the North Carolina Troops when they crossed the Yadkin River with Lord Cornwallis in hot pursuit. They were encamped across the river late one day and a terrible storm arose during the night preventing Lord Cornwallis from crossing at this point. Thisdelay helped the North Carolina Troops to regroup and move to Guilford Courthouse where they were defeated but the weakened troops of LordCornwallis were unable to do battle. The battle of Guilford Courthouse was the turning point for our troops. John Sauer guarded prisoners when they crossed the Yadkin River and encamped. Recently this Battlefield has been restored and named YORK HILL and it is a place of recreation for the public today.
John Sauer married twice, first to Christine (last name not known) and second to Agnes Owens. He was the father of a large family. In 1829, he went to Southern Illinois where his son Henry had gone in 1816 to found Sowersville Settlement. There John died August 22, 1834, and in recent years- November, 1963- the Egyptian Chapter of the American Revolution with relatives and friends assembled at the old Wetaug cemetery and dedicated a plaque in memory of John Sowers, Revolutionary Soldier.
