David Shoaf, Sr. was born in 1801 in North Carolina, where he lived until after he was married. He married Mary C. Sowers, and eight sons were the result of this union: Michael, William, Philip, David, Jr., Jacob, Solomon, Alfred and Henry. About 1826, the father emigrated to Kentucky with his family, making the journey with a wagon, and four years later came to Parke County, Indiana, locating on Raccoon Creek. He after ward removed to Illinois, where he died at the age of eighty-oneyears. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, and was, politically,a Democrat. David's wife, Mary C. died when Philip was only ten years, and David remarried to Mary's cousin, Mrs. Catherine Myers, nee Sowers, and to them were born nine children: Margaret, Mathias Samuel, Andrew, Viola, Joseph, Catherine I., Mary Ann, Susana M., and an infant daughter, who lived only 4 days. The above taken from Parke, Fountain, and Montgomery Counties of Indiana History published in 1893.
David moved his family, except his older sons, to Pilot Township, Vermillion County, Illinois, after the birth of his youngest child, in 1855 and before 1860. David died March 4, 1880 at 78 years, 5 months, and 2 days; and was buried at Embury Cemetery, located south and westof Collison, in Vermillion County, Illinois.
David Shoaf, Sr. received a land grant on July 2, 1832 in Parke County, Indiana. The 1832 land grant to David Shoaf of Putnam County, Indiana was #16746 issued from the general Land Office of the US of Crawfordsville, Indiana and dated June 7, 1833. This grant was for 40 acres(NW 1/4 NE 1/4 Section 8 Sugarcreek Township--just a section away from the northern border of the county). David received another grant on December 31, 1835 (NE 1/4 NW 1/4 Section 8, 40 acres) and still another on March 18, 1837 (SE 1/4 NW 1/4 Section 8, 40 acres) in Sugarcreek Township, Parke County, Indiana.
