=== Caesar Germanicus, who married Agrippin ===
Caesar Germanicus, who married Agrippina the Elder. He restored to Herod Agrippa II. the largest part of his great grandfather Herod the Great's dominions. Herod the Great, born about 70 B.C., an Edomite descended from Esau, was son of Cypros, an Arabian woman, and Antipater, her husband, who had been appointed Procurator of Judea by Julius Caesar in 47 B.C. He is known in history for the slaughter of the innocent first-born children (Bible New Testament , Gospel of St. Matthew 2:16). He had also murdered many relatives, including all his children by his first wife. It was his great grandson, Herod Agrippa II., tetrarch of Galilee, before whom St. Paul in 62 A.D., made his memorable defense recorded in the New Testament, Book of Acts, Chapter 26. Maintained in his power by the Romans, and faithful to their interests, he adopted the Jewish religion and tried to dissuade the Jews from rebelling. Agrippina the Elder was one of the most virtuous and heroic women of her time, born 12 B.C., died 33 A.D., daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, the greatest military commander after Julius Caesar, and of Julia, daughter of Augustus. She accompanied her husband, Caesar Germanicus, in his military expeditions until his death at Antioch, 19 A.D. Her husband's uncle, the Emperor Tiberius Claudius Caesar, jealous of the affection of the people for Agrippina, banished her to a small island, where she died of hunger in 33 A.D.

=== Caligula (Gaius Caesar Augustus Germani ===
Caligula (Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus) often exclaimed , "Oh that the Roman people had but one neck, that I migh t cut it off at a blow!" Caligula later demanded that divine honors be paid t o him throughout the Empire and when, in A.D. 40, the Jew s and Christians alone refused, he profaned the Holy Of Hol ies at Jerusalem by placing there a colossal statue of hims elf. Soon after this Caligula was murdered, 24 January A.D . 41, in his 29th year, when Nero was 4 years old.

=== Germanicus Caesar (15 BC-AD 19), Roman g ===
Germanicus Caesar (15 BC-AD 19), Roman general, son of the general Nero Claudius Drusus, and nephew and adopted son of Emperor Tiberius. Germanicus took part in campaigns against the Pannonian, Dalmatian, and Germanic tribes in eastern and northern Europe. In AD 12 he was consul, and the following year Emperor Augustus appointed him to command the eight Roman legions on the Rhine. In AD 14, on the death of Augustus, the legions mutinied, but Germanicus quelled the insurrection, after which he led the soldiers into battle. He routed the Marsi, a German tribe, and the next year met the German leader Arminius (Hermann), chief of the Cherusci, who in AD 9 had destroyed three Roman legions and driven their general, Publius Quintilius Varus, to suicide. The engagement was indecisive, but in AD 16 Germanicus, at great risk to his own troops, won two victories over Arminius and claimed Germany for Rome. Emperor Tiberius recalled Germanicus to Rome in AD 17 because he felt the Germans could most successfully be dealt with through diplomacy. The young general was received with great enthusiasm and honored with a triumph, the traditional celebration for victorious generals. Tiberius then dispatched him to settle a dispute that had arisen in the eastern provinces of Armenia and Parthia. On this mission, Germanicus was stricken with a fatal illness at Antioch. His friends charged that he had been poisoned on orders from Tiberius, who was supposed to have been jealous of his popularity. Germanicus, widely mourned in the provinces and in Rome, was survived by his wife Agrippina and six children. These included Caligula, later emperor, and a daughter, Agrippina the Younger, who became the mother of Emperor Nero.
