SHIMEA, SHIMEAH shĭm’ ĭ ə (שִׁמְעָ֖א, שִׁמְעָ֖ה, meaning: God has heard). 1. An older brother of David (1 Chron 2:13), also called SHAMMAH (shăm’ e, שַׁמָּ֑ה). This was the third son of Jesse, of Bethlehem (1 Sam 16:9; 17:13), and in turn the father of Jonadab (2 Sam 13:3, 32), a crafty man who urged Amnon to commit incest with his sister Tamar. Another son was Jonathan, who slew a Philistine giant (21:20-22; 1 Chron 20:6-8). Shimea was present during the choice and anointing of David (1 Sam 16:1-13), and was a member of Saul’s army (17:13).
