Jezebel. A Phoenician princess, daughter of Ethbaal, king of Zidonians, and wife of Ahab, king of Israel. This marriage, more than any otherevent, caused the downfall of the northern kingdom, as Jezebel introducedinto Israel the worst forms of Phoenician worship in the place of worship of Jehovah.
7º Reina de Israel
Jezebel the daughter of Ithobaal I of Sidon and the wife of Ahab, King of Israel, according to the Book of Kings of the Hebrew Bible
=== Through her influence the Phoenician wor ===
Through her influence the Phoenician worship of the god Baal wasintroduced into Israel. (Funk & Wagnalls) How'd you like your name to stand for "shameless, sacrilegioussuperslut"? That's what happened to Jezebel, the Phoenician queen ofIsrael. As queens go, she wasn't that loose or wicked. In fact, it was herreligious fervor (and maybe a heavy hand with the makeup) that got herinto hot water. Daughter of King Ethbaal of stinking-rich Tyre, Jezebelgrew up in the tug-of-war politics between the Phoenicians and theIsraelites. For a short time, the nations became trading partners andpolitical allies, and the Israelite king agreed to marry his son Ahab toJezebel. The newlyweds built an ivory house in the Jewish capital ofSamaria and started unwrapping gifts. Bedazzled Ahab soon did whateverit took to make Jezebel happy, which to her meant a new temple to worshipthe rites of Baal. Ahab and the locals could handle that; in fact, someJews thought Baal more attractive than Yahweh. (Baal worship includedseveral rancid practices, including temple prostitution and childsacrifice.) Jezebel also brought 400 priestesses and 450 prophets withher, who had to be housed, fed, and given rations of incense. This queen wasn't all take-take-take, however. When Ahab got ahankering for the vineyard next door, she didn't rest until she'd gottenit for him -- by faking his seal on a document that led to the owner'sconvenient death by stoning. Her proselytizing, extravagant personality, and foreigner status made her the perfect Bad Example for the prophetElijah. Elijah and Jezebel had countless run-ins: He beat her Baal boysin a public prosphesy-off, claimed credit for a drought, and predicted anasty end for her as a mongrel main course. To get some peace and quiet,Jezebel finally chased the old boy out of the country, where he died. In middle age, Ahab was killed in battle, which encouraged Jehu, thehead of the army, to jump the throne. Jehu had a few mop-up murders todo, but he f inally got around to Jezebel to make the prophet factionhappy. Putting on her most killer outfit, she waited at her window, mocking Jehu as an upstart. Livid, he ordered the household eunuchs topush Jez out, after which he ran over her with his chariot, leaving thecleanup to the hungry local mutts. Later, feeling bad about the dogthing, he went to retrieve her body for burial -- but all the caninecorps had left were the big pieces, a neatly suspicious echo of prophetElijah's dire words.
