  High Priest Zadok "the Priest" ben Ahitub ha-Kohen was living 0970 B.C. He was made High Priest by King Saul after the extermination of the family of Ahimelech. He stood aloof from Adonijah at the time of his attempted usurpation. He was son of Ahitub, of the line of Eleazer. In him the line of Phinehas resumed the dignity, and held it till the fall of Jerusalem. He was high priest in the time of David and Solomon. He was born 1 Chron. 6:8 "And Ahitub begat Zadok..." He was the son of Ahitub ben Amariah ha-Kohen.
  
  High Priest Zadok "the Priest" ben Ahitub ha-Kohen removed the ark of the covenant from Jerusalem at the time of Absalom's usurpation; and returned with it at David's command. He was a high priest in the reign of King David, whose line is the primary priestly heritage. He was the grandfather of High Priest Azariah ben Ahimaaz ha-Kohen; the son of Ahimaaz, who succeeded his grandfather Zadok as high priest in the days of Solomon.
  
  Abiathar, son of Ahimelech, the 11th High Priest of Israel, was removed from the high priesthood for conspiring against King Solomon, and was replaced by Zadok, son of Ahitub, 12th High Priest of Israel, who oversaw the construction of the First Temple.
  
  According to the genealogies given in 1 Chronicles 6:3–15, Zadok was a descendant of Uzzi (through Zerahiah, Meraioth, Amariah and Ahitub) and thus belonged to the line of Eleazar.

  Zadok (or Zadok HaKohen, also spelled Sadok, Sadoc, Zadoq or Tzadok; Hebrew: צָדוֹק הַכֹּהֵן‎, meaning "Righteous, Justified") was a Kohen (priest), biblically recorded to be a descendant from Eleazar the son of Aaron (1 Chron 6:4–8).
  
  He was the High Priest of Israel during the reigns of David and Solomon (2 Samuel 8:16–18). He aided King David during the revolt of his son Absalom, was subsequently instrumental in bringing Solomon to the throne and officiated at Solomon's coronation. After Solomon's building of the First Temple in Jerusalem, Zadok was the first High Priest to serve there (1 Kings 2:35).
