《史記·卷四·周本紀第四》:不窋卒,子鞠立。鞠卒,子公劉立。公劉雖在戎狄之間,復脩后稷之業,務耕種,行地宜,自漆、沮度渭,取材用,行者有資,居者有畜積,民賴其慶。百姓懷之,多徙而保歸焉。周道之興自此始,故詩人歌樂思其德。公劉卒,子慶節立,國於豳。

公劉,
姬姓,是鞠的兒子,周國第一個稱「公」的首領。公劉時期,周人經常受到戎狄侵擾,所居領地的自然環境也比較惡劣,故公劉將國都南遷到豳。到達豳後,周人開始有計劃的營建房屋,開墾荒地,不久就出現了繁榮的景象。周族的貴族們擇吉日飲酒聚會,祭祀祈禱,正式推舉公劉作宗主和國君。
公劉帶領族人沿漆水、沮水向南,渡渭水,取得石塊與金屬。之後周人開始制訂曆法並著手建立軍隊,亦積極發展農業,人口大增,以致四周人民紛紛前來歸附。孟子肯定了他帶領周族人勤勞致富的功績,稱他「公劉好貨」。《詩經》稱其為「篤公劉」,讚揚他勤勞忠厚。娶姒氏之女,生子:婺玺。
