  About Ulius "Uly" "Julius the Farmer" Buman
  Our story begins on the southwest side of Lake Zürich in Switzerland, on the strip of land between the lake and the Sihl River. Traveling south from the lakefront town of Horgen, you hike uphill for about a mile until you reach the ridge crest. The ground begins to drop again, sloping down toward the river, and on the far side of the valley is a low, tree-covered mountain, the "Zimmerberg". To your south, about a mile and half, the tiny village of Zimmerberg overlooks the river. Though having no more than a half-dozen houses, it's been there a long time, at least since the mid fourteenth century, when a family named Buman (also spelled Bauman) lived either in the village or near it.
  
  The name Bauman/Buman means "builder", and perhaps the family originated as builders of houses and barns. Sometime around 1369 a male child was born into the family. Named Ulius (the German form of Julius) he was also called "Ulie" or "Uly". Though we don't know how his parents made their living, Ulie himself became known as "Julius the Farmer" 1, which does not seem a very distinctive title given that most of his neighbors were likely farmers as well.
  
  Apparently he began this occupation around age 24, because according to Swiss tax records he lived 1393-1401 at Halden near Zimmerberg, Hirzel, Switzerland. 2 I have been unable to locate "Halden"; the village of Hirzen is about a mile south of Zimmerberg, and today there is nothing between the two but a scattering of farms, so it's difficult to tie this name to any specific place. If there ever was a village by that name in the Zimmerberg/Hirzel area, it has long since disappeared.
  
  We don't know the name of Ulie's wife, or how many children he had, other than a son named Hans. He died around 1425, or about age 56, which was doing pretty well for someone of that era.
  
  Switzerland itself was a fairly new country. It dates to the confederation, in 1291, of three cantons: Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. By Ulius' time it included Glarus, Zug, Lucerne, Zürich and Berne (Zürich joined in 1351).
  
  Ulius lived in a period of history known today as the Late Middle Ages, this being the rather calamitous last third of the Medieval period (the first third being the "Dark Ages", characterized by barbarian invasions and kingdoms of relatively short duration, and the middle third being the "High Middle Ages", a relatively quiet period of increasing population and economic growth). It was a time when the Catholic church was universal in western Europe (except for Moorish Spain), when people believed that the Earth was flat and at the center of the universe, when books where hand-written, and the Byzantine Empire, the successor to the old Eastern Roman Empire, was still the preeminent power in eastern Europe. Although cannons had appeared on the battlefield, small arms had not, and the pike and the bow were the dominant infantry weapons. At the time of Ulie's birth, the mounted knight was the epitome of military prowess, but in 1411, when he was 42, English longbowman defeated French knights at the battle of Agincourt.

  Uly Buman was born at Halden, Zimmerburg, Hirzel, Zürich, Switzerland. Named as Ulius "Julius the Farmer" Buman. Ulie Buman resided in Zimmerberg (small mountain), Zürich. "Uly Buman between 1393 and 1401 lived at Halden Zimmerberg, near Hirzel, Zürich." [1]
  "The tax records of Horgen on the west side of Lake Zurich show that a Uli Buman lived between 1393 and 1401 at Halden near Zimmerberg in what became after 1617 the parish of Hirzel." [2]
  "Der Geschlechtsname Baumann is in deutschredenden Ländern ein weit verbreiteter. Unsere Familie nannte sich bis um 1617 ausschliesslich 'Buman', wie der Name heute noch ausgesprochen wird: 'Bûma'. Später wechselte der Name, je nach Belieben der amtierenden Geistlichen zwischen Buman, Buwman, Bouwmann. Von 1760 an wird Baumann die Regel. Das zürcherische Urkunden-Buch erwähnt schon 1275 (Urk. 1614) und 1286 (Urk. 1961) den Namen Buman is Schweiz. Lindiners Chronik nennt 1344 in Wädenswil ein Buman's Gut und einen Buman's Acker. Von Wädenswil aus mögen die Buman auch nach dem Horgerberg gelangt sein. Urkunde Nr. 238 der Fraumünster-Adbei Zürich spricht von einem Uly Buman 'ob Egg in Kierlin', der wohl identisch war mit Buman, den Lindiners Chronik 1410 als auf dem Zimmerberg angesessen erwähnt. ... Die Buman vom Horgerberg waren ein dort und in Wädenswil altangesessenes Geschlecht. Unrichtig ist, was das Zürcher Wappenbuch (Ausgabe 1860) berichtet, nämlich, "die Buman seien zur Zeit der Reformation aus den katholischen Kantonen eingewandert". Richtig ist, dass die Buman schon vor 1393 auf dem Zimmerberge angesessen waren. Dort ist 1880 der Mannesstamm ausgestorben. Aber noch immer wird das dortige Rothûs als Bumahûs bezeichnet. Es ist dies ein uraltes, aber noch gut erhaltenes Gebäude, aus rot gestrichenen Balken zusammengefügt. Ende des 19. Jarhunderts waren die Fenster noch mit alten Buzenscheiben besetzt, der Dachgiebel trug einen Dachreuter; uralte Linden beschatteten die Hofstatt, die durch einen Brunnen belebt wurde. Ein kleines Nebengebäude trug den Anschein früher als Kapelle gedient zu haben. ... Die alten Steuerbücher im Zürcher Staatsarchive ergeben, dass aur dem Horgerberge steuerten: 1401 Ulrich Buman "ab der Halten" 15 schillling. [3]
  "Die Reihenfolge der Buman auf dem Zimmerberge beginnt 1393 mit Uly Buman. Laut Urkunde Nr 238 der Fraumünster-abtei wird 1393 ein ob Egg in Kieleren gelenes Gut zur Versteigerung gebracht, infolge rückständigen Erbzinses. Uly Buman ab dem Zimmerberg behauptete, dass auch noch andere Liegenschaften schuldig wären, an diesem Erbzinse mitzusteuern. Unklar lautet der Entscheid des zu Horgen tagenden Gerichtes, welches die Versteigerung gutzuheissen scheint. Tatsache ist aber, das 1458 Peter Buman, vermutlich ein Nachkomme des Uly Buman, dieses selbe Gut - Berg ob Egg - verpfänden durfte. 1401 tritt Uly Buman ab der Halden als Steuerträger auf und nochmals - 1401- als Zeuge in einer Streitsache."
