  CRUSADER JAN VAN ARKEL (Ancestor to Laurens) had a VISION while stationed before the walls of Jerusalem. After the victory over the Mussulmen, archangel Gabriel appeared to him above the walls of Jerusalem and said, "Go where the SWAN will lead you and build your castle there. Jan sailed with his ship after this swan. Where the swan built its nest, Jan built the first castle of the "van Arkels". As thanks to the divine sign, a gilded swan decorated the highest spire. ---------- The “LAND VAN ARKEL” was a manor of the counts of Holland; it was looked after by the LORDS OF VAN ARKEL from ABT 950 till 1412. THE BOUNDARIES WERE: Nowadays Everdingen (north), the river Linge (east), the river Merwede (south), the river Lek (west). TOWNS IN THE LAND OF ARKEL included: Arkel since ABT 950 (gem. Giessenlanden, Zuid-Holland), Leerbroek (gem. Zederik, Zuid-Holland), Asperen (gem. Lingewaal, Gelderland), Hagestein (gem. Vianen, Utrecht). Heukelom since 1230 (gem. Lingewaal, Gelderland), Bergambacht since 1260 (Zuid-Holland), Gorinchem since 1272 (Zuid-Holland), Van der Lede (Leerdam) since 1305 (Zuid-Holland), Haastrecht since 1351 (gem. Vlist, Zuid-Holland). ---------- HEIMAN VAN ARKEL (940-980) was made ruler of NEDER-FRIESLAND (present day Friesland) by TIELEMAN (Lord of Oost-Friesland under Keizer Otto I de Grote). Heiman became steward under count Dirk II of Holland. (By the counts of Holland and TEISTERBANT *) between 950 and 980 Heiman was assigned the lordship of lands later united under the name “HET LAND VAN ARKEL”. The village ARCLO (ARKEL) was mentioned early (in 641 a church was founded there) and Heiman took up residence here. The lands were described as “HET LAND VAN ARKEL”, “situated south of Kennemerland and Amstelland, between (the rivers) IJssel, Merwede and Linge”. Everything was concentrated around the manor of Arkel. In the 13th century the area of the land and it extension become more clear: the circumference of the land between the rivers Merwede and Linge was ABT 60 km. ---------- * In the Middle Ages TEISTERBANT was a county from Vlaardingen to Tiel, bordered by the rivers Lek, Maas, Waal and Hollandse IJssel. Present day Neder-Betuwe was part of it, as well as the towns Vianen, Culemborg, Batenburg , Geldermalsen and TIEL (which was the most important town in Teisterbant). THE HISTORIC LANDS OF ALTENA, ARKEL, BUREN, HEUSDEN and VIANEN were also part of it.
