Note: She is also known as “Domitienne”, “Ydomison” and “Ydonde” de Chièvres Eve was born at the beginning of the 12th century. Eve was the daughter and heiress of Guy (Gui, Wauthier, Widon) de Chièvres and his wife Ida de Hainaut. The primary source which names Eva/Damison as daughter of Guy de Chièvres and his wife Ida has not been identified, but this affiliation is logical when all the sources quoted in this section are read together especially the charters which name her “de Cirvia”. Boussu’s mid-18th century history of Ath confused the issue by stating firstly that “Rase de Gavre” married “Ide d’Ath, seconde fille de Wautier Seigneur d’Ath” and claimed rights to Ath “du chef de sa mère, de même que de sa tante Beatrix” and secondly that this “Rase de Gavre” was son of “Rase de Gavre, second époux d’Ide dame et héritière de Chièvres”[574]. He cites no source which confirms the information, and the general confusion of his description of the early Ath family inspires no confidence. Boussu presumably misinterpreted the Chronicon Hanoniense which records that "miles...Rasso de Gaura" married "Damison de Cirvia" after the death of “Egidii de Cin”, and in a later passage names “Rasso de Gaura, Rassonis et Damison de Cirvia filius”[575]. Eve had three husbands. Eve married firstly, Gilles de Chin, Seigneur de Berlaimont (-killed in battle [Roullecourt] [1137], bur Ghislenghien), son of ---. Gilles, in legend, defeated the Wasmes dragon. The Wasmes dragon is a legend from the Borinage, in the south of Belgium. It tells of Gilles de Chin's fight against a dragon which terrified the inhabitants of Wasmes. He died at the siege of Roucourt in 1137. Eve married secondly, in 1138, as his second wife, her cousin, Rasse IV de Gavre, son of Raso [III] van Gavre and his wife —. Raso was also one of the grandchildren of Wauthier de Chièvres. They had three children. The son of one of them, Rasse VI, was one of the signers of the Charter-law of 1194 . Rasse IV also died during a siege of Roucourt in 1150. The Chronicon Hanoniense records that "miles...Rasso de Gaura" married "Damison de Cirvia" after the death of “Egidii de Cin”[336]. Nicolas Bishop of Cambrai confirmed the property of Saint-Ghislain, including the donation of “unum mansum in Bovingis” made by "Domina Æva quæ cognominatur Domoisuns" for the soul of "viri sui Ægidii", by charter dated 1143[337]. Eve married thirdly, after 1150, Nicholas [III] de Rumigny Seigneur de Florennes et de Rumigny (-before 1179), son of Nicholas [II] Seigneur de Rumigny and his second wife Aleidis de Hainaut. Their son Nicolas IV is also a signatory to the Charter-law. Her third marriage is indicated by the Chronicon Hanoniense referring to the wife of "Nicholaus [qui et Ruminium et Florinas castra posedit" as "Damison de Cirvia"[578]. Nicolas Bishop of Cambrai confirmed that “Domina Eva de Cirvia que dicitur Domisons” donated “medietatem ville...Erbisul” to Saint-Ghislain (founded by “genitricis nostre Ide”), for the soul of “viri sui Razonis de Gavara”, by charter dated 1161, signed by “Razonis et Widonis filiorum ipsius Eve, et Razonis...”[339]. Eve was not satisfied only with liberalities towards the nuns of Ghislenghien. She was socially and religiously very active. In Chièvres itself, she built a leper hospital, the Saint-Jean chapel and the chapel of Notre-Dame de la Fontaine. Eve had a sickroom for lepers built outside Chièvres after the death of Nicolas III de Rumigny (c. 1170). A chapel was added to it and the whole was entrusted to religious. It is mentioned in a bull of Lucius III , pope from 1181 to 1185, who granted religious privileges. The privileges granted by Pope Lucius III were confirmed by his successors Gregory VIII and Alexander IV. The establishment was vast and had its chapel and cemetery. Its chapel is still visible today. Eve founded the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fontaine (Chièvres). Not far from the castle, a short distance from the town of Ath, near a fountain between the church and the market, an elderberry housed a statue of the Virgin with a miraculous reputation. It was probably one of the roadside shrines that existed all over Europe at that time. Ève de Chièvres had the statue placed in a chapel which she had erected at the same time. The Abbot Orsini wrote: “Our Lady of Chieves, in Hainault, where, in the year 1130, the lady of the place, named Ida (Eve), had a chapel built near a fountain where an image of Our Lady had been found, which has since wrought many miracles.” An important pilgrimage existed in the Middle Ages, of which the procession, established by Eve herself, remains today. The Virgin of Chièvres operated miraculous cures of gout, deafness, blindness, ... The chapel was also a respite chapel where children who were born dead and therefore unbaptized were exposed. At the first sign of "life" (no doubt caused by the corruption of the body), they hastened to baptize the child before burying him. Saint-Nicolas Hospital was founded at the end of the 12th century by Eva de Chièvres; it was initially dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Fontaine . Widows, orphans, the poor and pilgrims were fed there. The sick were also treated there. The administration was managed by the monks under the authority of the bishop of Cambrai. To cover operating costs, the hospital had its own resources. Sometime after the death of Nicolas III de Rumigny (d. between 1170 and 1175), Ève de Chièvres retired to Ghislenghien abbey. The abbey of Ghislenghien, founded in 1128 by her aunt Ide d'Ath, the wife of Gossuin II of Mons, had received several donations from Eve de Chièvres. She made donations to the abbey on the death of her husbands: part of Gibecq and part of Erbisoeul were thus ceded for the rest of their souls. Eve died around 1180 at the abbey of Ghislenghien in Belgium.
