  James Stephen Nigh was born in Junction City, Kansas a son of Harry and Bertha Nigh. He grew to manhood and received his education at the Council Grove and Cottonwood Falls schools. While a youth he was baptized in the Jesus Name Pentecostal Church.
  James joined the National Guard in 1941, and was called to active duty in January of '42, being honorablly discharged from this tour of duty June 3, 1945, having served 18 months of this time with the Normandy invasion and in Germany, with the 35th division, Company C, 137th infantry. He received two Purple Hearts, the silver star, bronze oak leaf clusters, American Defense ribbon, 5 European ribbons, the French Croix de Guerre decoration, and the good conduct medal.
  In February 1948 re re-enlisted with the Infantry, receiving a medical discharge September 23, 1948 as Staff Sergeant.
  He was joined in marriage to Claire Aileen Shoaf on July 31, 1945 at Fredonia, Kansas. They lived in Topeka a short time before moving to Wichita to establish their home. Six children were born of this union. They moved to Shawnee in 1955 where he was employed with the Santa Fe Railroad, and for two years owned and operated the Shawnee Shoe Repair.
