  In a 1993 article in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Douglas Richardson explained in detail that the discovery of a marriage between Anne Holyoke and John Morris "solves a long-standing mystery originating in the will of Anne's brother, the immigrant, Edward Holyoke, which included bequests to his kinswoman, Mary Mansfield, and kinsman, Thomas Morris of New Haven, Conn." The key to the connections that make Mary Mansfield and Thomas Morris kin to Edward Holyoke is the information that the two children of Anne Holyoke and John Morris were their son Thomas Morris who died at New Haven 21 July 1673, and their daughter Mary Morris, who married John Mansfield who died at Lynn 16 October 1671.
  
  Previously Thomas Morris and Mary Rees had been incorrectly included as his parents.
  
  There is no marriage record for Thomas and Elizabeth. We don't know exactly when or exactly where they married. However, they appear to have lived their adult life in New Haven. Elizabeth's maiden name is unknown.
  
  In 1637 a small party of Puritans reconnoitered the New Haven harbor area and wintered over. In April 1638, the main party of five hundred Puritans who had left the Massachusetts Bay Colony under the leadership of the Reverend John Davenport and London merchant Theophilus Eaton sailed into the harbor. It was their hope to set up a theological community with the government more closely linked to the church than that in Massachusetts, and to exploit the area's excellent potential as a port. The Quinnipiacs, who were under attack by neighboring Pequots, sold their land to the settlers in return for protection.
  
  By 1640, "Qunnipiac's" theocratic government and nine-square grid plan were in place, and the town was renamed Newhaven, with 'haven' meaning harbor or port. The settlement became the headquarters of the New Haven Colony, distinct from the Connecticut Colony previously established to the north centering on Hartford. Reflecting its theocratic roots, the New Haven Colony forbid the establishment of other churches, whereas the Connecticut Colony permitted them.
  
  In 1664 New Haven became part of the Connecticut Colony when the two colonies were merged under political pressure from England. Some members of the New Haven Colony seeking to establish a new theocracy elsewhere went on to establish Newark, New Jersey.
  
  Thomas is first mentioned in the New Haven records in 1638 as a ship carpenter. Thomas is said to have had one of the seven families who lived on the "bank-side," that is on East Water Street. See the book, "History of the Colony of New Haven to Its Absorption Into Connecticut" which can be readily found online, page 152 and 702 (see attached under Sources).
  
  Thomas and Elizabeth are believed to have had 8 children in New Haven, Connecticut, starting in 1641 when Hannah was born. Elizabeth's name is not listed on the birth or baptismal records of any of her children.
  
  According to the book, "Records of the Town of Newark, New Jersey: From Its Settlement in 1666, to Its Incorporation as ..." (see attached under Sources), in 1667 Morris subscribed to the Fundamental Agreements entered into by the group planning Newark. In the first division of land there, he received Lot #31 for which he was assessed £ 385. This lot lay between Broad and Washington Streets in Newark, and is now bisected by New Street, lying on the upland area of the city. There is no evidence that Morris ever improved this land or built on it. Thomas Morris' name is found in 1670-71 among those who were to receive a lot in the second division of salt meadow in Newark. This is the last time his name appeared in the town records.
  
  Thomas left behind a will dated 1 July 1672. Thomas has a death record in New Haven vital records. See attached.
  
  Morris Cove, also known as East Shore is a neighborhood in the city of New Haven, Connecticut located on the east side of New Haven and thought to be named after Thomas Morris.
  
  Thomas was mentioned in the will of Edward Holyoke, his mother's brother, which was written 25th December 1658. To quote from the 1993 article above mentioned:
  "Edward Holyoke died at Rumney Marsh, 4 May 1660, and gave legacies to his kinsman, Thomas Morris of Newham [New Haven in abbreviated form must be understood], and to his kinswoman, Mary Mansfield.
  "John Mansfield of Lynn (son of Robert and Elizabeth and brother of Andrew and Joseph) had a wife whose name is not revealed in his probate; she is always mentioned as his wife or widow. [Essex county Provate, 301:5, 10; 311:314, 315; 312:149]. His will, probated in 1671, left his estate 'unto my Cozen Daniel Gott his now wife & his heirs who... freely begotten of his now wife... but if they both shall depart this life without a lawful heir' the estate is to go to his brother Andrew's children. This was provisional-- "if Daniel Gott & his family come to Lynn & live with me and my wife at Lynn during our lives." Many years later, in 1715, Daniel Gott quit-claimed to the Mansfield family the estate of John Mansfield, stating that though he did for many years profit and enjoy the land and the living, he had not carried out the provisions of the will.
  
  "The wife of John Mansfield is probably the Mary Mansfield called kinswoman by Edward Holyoke, who cannot be accounted for as any Mansfield girl or wife unless she was the wife of John. The wife of Daniel Gott who was "cousin" (niece) of John Mansfield's wife was Elizabeth Morris. The only Elizabeth Morris suitable in age who has been located was the daughter of Thomas Morris of New Haven, who was also called kinsman by Edward Holyoke.
  
  "The logical inference is that Thomas Morris and Mary the wife of John Mansfield were brother and sister, and relatives of Edward Holyoke; and that Elizabeth Morris, the wife of Daniel Gott, was the daughter of Thomas Morris, and hence the niece of the wife of John Mansfield."
