Source: NEHGR Volume CXLVII, January 1993, Ancestry of Edward Holyoke. The English Ancestry of Edward Holyoke and of his Nephew, Thomas Morrisof New Haven, by Douglas Ricardson. The English origins of Edward Holyoke were first noted in print as earlyas 1860, by James Savage, who wrote that the immigrant hailed "fromTamworth, co. Stafford, on the edge of Warwickshire (GenealogicalEncyclopedia of the First Settlers of New england [Boston, 1860-62],2:456). In his account, Savage made a minor geographical blunder: priorto his migration Edward Holyoke actually resided at Tanworth, co.Warwick, a parish separate and distinct from Tamworth, co. Stafford. In1880, James A. Emmerton and Henry F. Waters added to our knowledgeconsiderably by publishing transcripts of two pre-migration Holyokefamily letters, as well as an abstract of the will of the immigrant'sfather, John Holyoke of Alcester, co. Warwick (Emmerton and Waters,Gleanings from English Records about New England Families, EssexInstitute Historical collections, 17:57-59). Given this promising start,it is curious that since 1880 no serious research appears to have beenundertaken regarding the Holyoke ancestry. Some years ago this wirter decided to investigate the origins andancestry of Edward Holyoke and his wife, Prudence Stockton. The surname Holyoke and its variant forms derive from the holy oak, orgospel oak, an archaic term for a boundary tree. The surname isassociated in early records with the parishes of Tanworth, co. Warwick, and King's Norton, co. Worcester, two parishes located along the borderof those two counties, about two miles apart. Research indicates thatthis are was the ancestral home of the New England immigrant, EdwardHolyoke. Surviving membership records of the popular religious and social guild ofnearby Knowle, Warwickshire, indicate that in 1486, a John Holyoke andwife Ellen, of Tanworth, became members, followed in 1500 by JamesHolyhok, also of Tanworth. Other members of this guild were John Holyokeand Leticia, his wife, who joined in 1469; Edmund Holiock and Joan hiswife, in 1506; and John Holyoke and Margery his wife, in 1511, the threelatter couples all of King's Norton (W. B. Bickley, ed., The Register ofthe Guild of Knowle in the County of Warwick 1451-1535 [Walsall, 1894].This guild, known to have had several thousand members from easternWarwick and nearby Worcester and Stafford, had as its purpose theencouragement of charity and useful living; it being meetings, feasts, plays, processions, and pageants. Another religious and social guild located at Stafford-upon-Avon,Warwickshire, records the payment in 1532-33 of five shillings for thecelebration of devine services for the souls of Elizabeth Holyocke, widow, of King's Norton, and of Thomas Holyocke. These early Holyokes lived prior to the commensement of the parishregisters in England, and little else is known of them. John and EllenHolyoke of Tanworth, mentioned above, who joined the Knowle guild in1486, are quite possibly forebears of Edward Holyoke, the New Englandimmigrant, but the surviving parish and probate records are insufficientto provide the connecting generations. The earliest known ancestor ofthe immigrant is his great-grandfather, given name unknown, who was bornprobably about 1500, probably of Tanworth, with whom the pedigree belowcommenses. It is from wills of this Holyoke's childless son, Edward Holyoke dated 2September 1591 and proved 25 August 1598, and Edward's widow Margaret, that we learn most about this family. Edward's chief male heir was hisgreat-nephew, Edward Holyoke, the eventual immigrant to New England. ... (The text of these wills is in the NEHGS reference above.)... Douglas Richardson's article then provides a genealogy of the Holyokefamily, starting with the unnamed Holliocke. 1. ________Holliocke, born say 1500, of whom virtually nothing is known, probably lived in the parish of Tanworth, co. Warwick, where the surnameoccurs on a regular basis, and where his so n, Edward lived, ownedproperty, and probably married. The wife of this Holliocke was possiblythe widow Joane Hollioke, buried there 16 December 1573.
