This is copied from Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families, by James Alonzo Matthews. HENRY de PERCY was the 2d Lord Percy of Alnwick. His date of birth is somewhat in doubt but is given as 1299. At the time of his father's death, he was a minor, but the 15th of Edward II, he procured an absolute livery of his lands, though he had not then made proof of his age. In 1331 he had livery on a grant of an inheritance of the castle of Werkworth in Northumberland which, after the death of Sir John Clavering without male issue, was to devolve on the King (Edward III) and his heirs. In 1346 he was a principal commander at the battle of Durham where the Scotch army was totally defeated and David, their king, was taken prisoner and shortly afterward died on February 26, 1351. Henry married Idona, daughter of Robert, Lord Clifford, and they had issue: Henry; William, to whom his father granted the manor of Kirk-Levington; Richard, who died young; Thomas, Bishop of Norwich, who was born in 1333 and died in 1369, the 44th of Edward III, and was buried in his own Cathedral; and Roger, the fifth son, who had the manors of Stanerbot and Dalton-Percy. Henry and Idona also had four daughters: Maud, Eleanor, Isabel, and Margaret. Idona died in 1365.
=== Henry was 16 years of age at his father ===
Henry was 16 years of age at his father's death, yet already renowned for his skill in tourney, and the promise he gave of becoming a stout and fearless captain, and in the records of Alnwick. "He became beyond all his forebears the most famous and powerful." In 1322 he was knighted and accompanied the king on an expedition to the walls of Edinburgh. Against Edward II favorites, Hugh le Despenser, Sr. and Jr., Percy made a firm stand, and he was of the party of Queen Isabel until after the murder of the King (Edward II), her behavior and that of Roger Mortimer set all that was honest in England against them. It was then that the Lord of Alnwick drew his sword for the young King, Edward III, and his name was in the list of Peers who passed sentence upon Mortimer. He was made Governor of the Castles of Pickering and Scarborough, Guardian of Portre Castle in Northumberland 1326, Warden of Skipton Castle and of the Scotch Marches 1327. Summoned to Parliament 1322-1351. He died suddenly at Alnwick Feb. 17, 1352.
