{{British Isles 742-1499}}"Clinton was born in the early years of the fourteenth century; he wasknighted by 1324 and was summoned to serve in Gascony in 1325. He evidently supported the coup of Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer in 1327, and was rewarded for his services on 18 September 1327 with a grant of the castle, manor, and hundred of Halton, Cheshire, and the rank ofknight-banneret. In November 1327 he conducted William, count of Hainault, and his daughter Philippa to the English court for the latter's marriage to Edward III. For these and similar services he received hisfirst personal summons to parliament in September 1330 and was appointed justiciar of Chester by October. However, Clinton would appear to have defected from the queen's cause, for he supported the young king's surprise attack on Mortimer at Nottingham in November 1330. The strong bond of friendship between the two men is suggested by events at the Dartford tournament in the spring of 1331, when the king himself fought under Clinton's standard." (Ref: ODNB)
"Clinton died on 25 August 1354, having made his will two days before. He specified that his body should be buried at Maxstoke Priory, where, under the terms of the foundation, bread was distributed to 100 poorpeople of the parish every year at his anniversary. Clinton's family had prospered through his connections: his brother John (d. 1335) had been summoned to parliament from 1332 and his nephew had an active career in politics and government during the second half of the fourteenth century. The comital title, however, became extinct on William Clinton's death and the senior line of the family maintained its baronial status as the lords Clinton and Saye." (ibid)

== Note ==It would be interesting to know whether the earldom was created in tail male - the date is early, but not impossible. This bears on whetherWilliam's daughter could be a legitimate daughter by an unknown firstwife.

=== William de Clinton, younger son, whose ===
William de Clinton, younger son, whose great actions and eminent employments do so sufficiently manifest his great ability, that he may well be reputed one of the chief worthies of the kingdom. He was Baron Clinton, Earl of Huntingdon. Barony by writ of summons 6 Sept., 1330. Earldom by letters patent, 16 March, 1337. In 1330 he was made Justice of Chester, and within less than two months afterwards made Constable of Dover Castle and warden of the Sinque Ports; shortly after this being one of those who surprised the great Mortimer, at Nottingham Castle. He had summons to Parliament as Baron Clinton, 6 Sept., 1330, to 14 Jan., 1337. In three years subsequently his lordship was constituted Lord Admiral of the Seas, from the Thames westwards, and in that year he was engaged in the Scottish wars, as he was in 1335/6. In the 11th of King Edward III, then enjoying the highest favour of the King, his lordship was created, by letters patent, dated 1337, March 16, Earl of Huntingdon, having at the same time not only 20p per annum given him out of the issue of the county, to be paid by the sheriff, but 1000 marks per annum in land, to gold to himself and his male heirs forever. He subsequently participated in his gallant sovereign's wars, both in Scotland and France, and was frequently employed in foreign embassies of the first importance. He was a second time constituted Lord Admiral, and also Constable of Dover Castle and Warden of the Cinque Ports. In the 3rd year of Edward III, 1329/30, he wedded Juliana, daughter and heir of Sir Thomas de Leybourne, a great Kentish heiress, and widow of Sir John Hastings and Sir Thomas le Blount, which, by Sir William Dugdale, is observed to be a great step to his advancement; but it is evident he had distinguished himself before his marriage, for on Feb. 20, 1325, the King signified to him that, having put off his expedition into Guyen, he nevertheless commanded him to Portsmouth, to accompany John, Earl of Warren and Surrey, with the f orces under his command in those parts. Further reciting that whereas the said William de Clinton had performed good service to him and to Queen Isabel, his mother, when she was beyond the seas. (Isabel was wife of Edward II, and daughter of Philip, the Fair, King of France, and it was through her that Edward III claimed the throne of France after her brothers died.) For this service the said William Clinton had grants to the castle and manor, in the hundred of Halerton, in counties of Chester and Lancaster. After many signal exploits, he was on 29 Aug., 1339, in that engagement near Winclelsea, where the Spaniards were beaten. He died 25 Aug., 1354, sine prole male, leaving an only child, a daughter Elizabeth. Juliana, his wife, surviving, was a great benefactress to the Abbey of St. Austin's at Canterbury, and is buried on the south side of the church.
