=== Discrepancy in published information concerning Sir William Hesketh, his wife Maud Fitton, and their immediate family ===
In the Visitation of Lancashire, 1613, by Sir Richard Saint George, it is reported that Sir William Hesketh is married to Maud Fitton, daughter of Richard Fitton. Through his wife Maud Fitton, Sir William Hesketh comes into possession of the Manor of Rufford. The Visitation of Lancashire 1613 reports Sir William Hesketh has two brothers, John Hesketh and Adam Hesketh, and William's son and heir is Thomas Hesketh.
However, the British History Online history of the Manor of Rufford, reports that John Hesketh and Adam Hesketh are the sons of Sir William Hesketh, not his brothers, and that John Hesketh is the heir of the Manor of Rufford, having received half of the property from his mother, Maud Fitton, and half of the property from his aunt, Anabil Fitton, sister of Maud Fitton, John Hesketh thus becoming the sole Lord of the Manor of Rufford. The history of the Manor of Rufford further reports that John Hesketh's son and heir is another William Hesketh, Knight, suggesting that Thomas Hesketh, reported as the son of Sir William Hesketh in the Visitation of Lancashire, is likely also a brother of John and Adam Hesketh but did not inherit the Manor of Rufford which went instead to his brother John Hesketh, the oldest brother.
The Visitation of Lancashire, 1613, is a gathering of the information on the Hesketh family from one member of that family living in 1613. The information from the British History Online history of the Manor of Rufford apparently comes from written historical records of the 1300s and is thus likely the most nearly correct and accurate information concerning the Manor of Rufford and who possessed the Manor. The Pedigree of the Hesketh family contained in the Visitation of Lancashire, 1613, follows the line of Thomas Hesekth, son of Sir William Hesketh and Maud Fitton. The Pedigree does not continue the lines of John Hesketh or Adam Hesketh.
