Peter, born 1286, the son and heir of Ranulph le Roter, was aged 5 when an Inquisition was taken at Alvandeley in Chester, on the Friday after St. Cuthbert, in response to a writ to Robert de Valle Regalie, escheator in co Chester dated 3 March 20 Edward I [1291].[1] Another Inquisition was held at Weverham in Chester, on the Saturday after St. Cuthbert, in response to a writ to Robert de Valle Regalie, escheator in co Chester dated 6 March 20 Edward I [1291].[1]
Peter was also known as Sir Piers de Thornton.[2]
He married Lucy, daughter and coheir of William de Hellesby, by whom he had eight daughters and coheiresses.

Peter inherited from his father Ranulph, property in co Cheshire in Kyngeslay/Kyngeslegh, Northlegh, Neuton, Crouton, Codinton and Honston or Onston, Chester, Thornton, Elton and Aston.
