    Note: Theobald de Verdun (1278 - 1316) was the second and eldest surviving son of Theobald de Verdun, 1st Baron Verdun, of Alton, Staffordshire, and his wife Margery de Bohun. Theobald married as his first wife Maud (otherwise 'Matilda') Mortimer, daughter of Edmund Mortimer, 2nd Baron Mortimer and Margaret Fiennes / de Fenlas. Theobald married as his second wife Elizabeth de Clare, widow of John de Burgh, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Gloucester (also 6th Earl of Hertford and 9th Lord of Clare) and Joan of Acre, daughter of King Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castile. Theobald died on Tuesday 27 July 1316 at Alton Castle and was buried at Croxden Abbey on 19 September 1316.

Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said Isabel, and to warn Queen Isabella, the king’s mother, who has the wardship, &c., or her bailiff, to be present, &c., 20 February, 5 Edward III [1331]. WILTS. Proof of age, Friday before the Annunciation, 5 Edward III [1331]. (defaced.) John le Duyn, knight, aged 60 years, says that the said Isabel was 14 years of age on the feast of St. Benet [12 January] last past, for she was born at Aunbresbury on that day, 10 Edward II [1317], and baptized in the church there: at that time he was staying in his manor of Tudeworth, four leagues from Aunbresbury, and saw Queen Isabella come from the manor of Clarendon to lift the said Isabel from the font, and he was present. Henry Borry, aged 50 years and more, says the like, and he saw Roger, then bishop of Salisbury, come from his manor of Wodeford to baptize the same Isabel, and he came in the company of the said bishop, whose servant (familiaris) he then was. Walter de Hungerford, aged 45, says the like, for he was similarly present at her baptism, in the company of the aforesaid bishop. Hereditary Constable of Ireland, Justiciar of Ireland, hereditary patron of Croxden Abbey. Second but eldest surviving son of Thebaud de Verdun and Margery de Bohun. Grandson of John de Verdun and Margery de Lacy, daughter of Gilbert. Grandson of Humphrey de Bohun and Eleanor de Brewes. Husband of Maud de Mortimer, married 29 July 1302 at Wigmore, Herefordshire. Maud was the daughter of Sir Edmund de Mortimer, 1st Lord Mortimer, a descendant of King John and Margaret de Fiennes, daughter of William and descendant of King Henry II. Her maritagium included the Castle and Manor of Dunamase in Ireland. They had four daughters: * Joan, wife of Sir Thomas de Furnival * Elizabeth, wife of Sir Bartholomew de Burghersh * Margery, wife of Sir John Crophill * Katherine Theobald was knighted by the King in Northumberland on 24 June 1298. He fought in the second line at Falkirk July of 1298. Summoned to Parliament 1299 to 1315 as Theobaldo de Verdun junior, where as he became Lord Verdun. Maud died at Alton, Staffordshire on the 17th or 18th of Sept 1312 after childbirth and buried at Croxden Abbey. Theobald married again, to Elizabeth de Clare, the daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester and Joan of England the daughter of King Edward I. She was the widow of John de Burgh, who died in a skirmish on the 18th of June 1313. They had one daughter, Isabel, who would marry Henry de Ferrers. Theobald would die estate at Alton, Staffordshire. His widow would remarry Sir Roger D'Amory by 1317. A manuscript narrating the foundation of Wigmore Abbey names “Rogerus primogenitus…Matilda…Johanna…Johannes, Elizabetha…Hugo…Walterus…et Edmundus” as children of “Edmundus de Mortuomari…Rogeri de Mortuomari…secundogenitus” and his wife “Margaretam…filiam domini Willielmi de Fendles de Hispania”, adding that Matilda married “Teobaldo de Verdun, domino medietatis de Lodelowe, filio Johannis de Verdon et Margeriæ filiæ Gilberti de Lacy”[742]. The Chronicle of Croxden records the marriage “apud Wigmore IV Kal Aug” 1302 of “dominus Theobaldus de Verdun hæres domini Theobaldi filii Johannis de Verdun” and “Matildam filiam domini Edmundi de Mortuomari”[743]. The Chronicle of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire records the first marriage of "Theobaldo Verdon" and "Matildam filiam domini Edmondi de Mortuo Mari", and names their children "Johannes et Willilemus et iii filiæ…Johanna, Elizabetha et Margeria"[744]. The Chronicle of Croxden records that “Matildis de Verdun domina de Alveton” gave birth “die beati Laurentii” 1312 to “quartam filiam...Margeriam” and died “XIV Kal Oct in castro de Alveton”[745]. m secondly (near Bristol 4 Feb [1314]) as her second husband, ELIZABETH de Clare, widow of JOHN de Burgh of Ulster, daughter of GILBERT de Clare Earl of Gloucester & his second wife Joan of England "of Acre" (Tewkesbury 16 Sep 1295-4 Nov 1360). The Chronica de Fundatoribus et Fundatione of Tewkesbury Abbey names “Elianoram, Elizabetham, et Margaretam” as the three daughters of “Gilbertus secundus” and his wife “Johanna de Acres, filia regis Edwardi primi”, adding in a later passage that Elizabeth had three husbands “Johannem de Borow comitem de Holvestre…”[746]. The Annales Londonienses record the marriage "ad festum Sancti Michaelis" in 1308 of "filius comitis Ultoniæ" and "sororem comitis Claudiocestriæ"[747]. The Chronicle of Croxden records the marriage “III Non Feb...apud Brystoll” 1314 of “dominus Theobaldus de Verdun” and “Elizabetham filiam domini Gilberti de Clare comitis Gloucestriæ et dominæ Johannæ de Acres filiæ Edwardi regis” who had previously married “filio primogenito comitis de Uluecestre in Hibernia”[748]. The Chronicle of Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire records the second marriage of "Theobaldo Verdon" and "Elizabetham de Burgo, nuper uxorem Johannis de Burgo filii comitis Ultoniæ, sororem Gilberti de Clare comitis Gloucestriæ", and names their children "Isabella et Katherina"[749]. She married thirdly (1317) Roger Damory. The will of "Elizabeth de Burg Lady of Clare", dated 25 Sep 1355, proved 3 Dec 1360, chose burial “in the Sisters Minories beyond Aldgate, London”, requested masses for the souls of "Monsr John de Bourg, Monsr Theobaud de Verdon and Monsr Roger Dammory my lords", bequeathed property to “dame Elizabeth countess of Ulster, the debt which my son, her father, owed me at his death...my daughter Bardolf...Monsr John Bardolf and to my said daughter his wife...my joesne fille Isabel Bardolf to her marriage, Agnes her sister to her marriage...Monsieur William de Ferrers...Monsr Thomas Furnival...my daughter Countess of Athol...”[750].     Note: 86. MARGERY, ONE OF THE DAUGHTERS AND HEIRS OF THEOBALD DE VERDON, whom William le Blount married. Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said Margery, and to warn Bartholomew de Burghessh and Walter de Shobedon, guardians of the lands, &c. to be present, 20 February, 1 Edw. III [1327]. STAFFORD. Proof of age taken at Stafford, 10 March, 1 Edward III [1327]. John de Hodinet, aged 54 years, says that the said Margery was 16 years of age at the feast of St. Laurence [10 August] last past, for she was born at Alveton on that day, 4 Edward II [1310], and baptised in the church there on the same day; and this he knows because he was there with the said Theobald and announced the said birth to him. Henry de Athelaxton, aged 44 years, says the like, and knows it because he was at Croxdene by Alveton and heard how John de Hodinet announced the said birth. William atte Blakelegh, aged 60 years, says the like, and knows it because he married Isabel his daughter at the said feast of St. Laurence. Richard de Farlegh, aged 50 years, says the like, and knows it because he buried William his firstborn son on the same feast of St. Laurence. Richard de Dolverne, aged 47 years, says the like, and knows it because he hunted with the said Theobald at Wotton by Alveton and shot a buck on the same feast of St. Laurence. Richard de la Withurste, aged 51 years, says the like, and knows it because he took to wife Denise, daughter of Hugh de la Schawe, on the feast of St. Bartholomew next following the said feast of St. Laurence. Robert de la Baraile, aged 49 years, says the like, and knows it because he lifted Agnes daughter of Richard de la Withurste from the sacred font on the same day. John Balle, aged 53 years, says the like, and knows it because he took his journey to Santiago on the feast of the Assumption next following the said feast of St. Laurence. Roger le Verney, aged 61 years, says the like, and knows it because he gave to Robert Body a virgate of land in Denston with Margaret his daughter at the feast of St. Giles following the said feast of St. Laurence. Peter de Daddesleye, aged 57 years, says the like, and knows it because he was with the said Theobald in Ireland at the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist next following the said feast of St. Laurence. Andrew de Madeleye, aged 48 years, says the like, and knows it because John his son was presented to the church of Stoke by the said Theobald at the feast of St. Michael next after the said feast of St. Laurence. Robert Russel, aged 66 years (?), says the like, and knows it because he buried Alice his wife on the morrow of the said feast of St. Laurence. C. Edw. III. File 8. (3.)
