«b»Biography«/b»
Robert had fought with his brothers Hamon and Roger against Simon de Montfort in the barons' wars; like Hamon, he went with Prince Edward to the Crusade of 1270, but, more fortunate than his brother, returned in safety to end his days in England. He was pardoned for cutting and selling a part of a wood, which had been given to him by his brother Hamon, at Chawton in 1272 in Hampshire, England. He did homage for the manor, which his brother Hamon had given him by charter, of Wrockwardine in 1275 in Telford & Wrekin, England.

SOURCES: 1. Cokayne, G.E., _The Complete Peerage_, p. 351, fn. c: Besides his son and heir, John IV of Knockyn, John III leStrange left threesons, Hamon, Roger, and Robert. Roger inherited Ellesmere from hisbrother Hamon who died without issue in the Holy Land, but there wasquestion as to the validity of the grant and Roger obtained a fresh grant. p. 346: Roger, Baron Strange of Ellesmere, married firstly, Maud, widow of Roger de Mowbray, sister and co-heir of Simon de Beauchamp, andeldest daughter of William de Beauchamp, Baron of Bedford. She died beforeApr 1273, and he married secondly, another Maud who survived him. Hedied without issue 31 July 1311, when the Barony became extinct. Hiswidow was still living 8 Apr 1331. 2. Burke, _DAF&E_, p. 516: Roger leStrange was the second son ofHamon leStrange of Ellesmere and inherited from his older brother Hamonwho died in the Holy Land without issue. This is in contradiction tothe well-documented evidence presented by Cokayne to make Roger the sonof John III leStrange. Burke goes on to give further information about the life of SirRoger of Ellesmere, which may be presumed to be more accurate. Sir Rogerwas the Sheriff for co. York. in the 53rd Henry III and again in 56 H III.In the 4th Edward I, he obtained a confirmation of the grant made tohim by his brother Hamon. Some years later, he was made justice of allthe forests south of Trent. In 22 Edward I he had a military summonsto march against the French, and he was summoned to Parliament as aBaron from 24 June 1295 to 26 Aug 1296. He married Maud, widow of Rogerde Mowbray and one of the daughters and co-heirs of William deBeauchamp of Bedford. Dugdale says he was living in 1303, but there is noinformation on him after that date. He is presumed to have died without issuewhen the Barony became extinct.
