=== Life Sketch ===
Gilbert was Lord of Redesdale between 1245 and 1307, and Earl of Angus in Scotland between 1267 and 1307.
Gilbert was summoned by writ directed "Gilberto de Umfraunvill' Comiti de Anegos" in 1283.
He was Baron of Prudhoe at Northumberland, England, between 1283 and 1307.
He fought for King Edward I in the victory over the Scots (who were led by William Wallace) on 22 July 1298 at the Battle of Falkirk, Scotland.
He died before 13 October 1307.
Son of the 7th Countess and Gilbert de Umfraville (b.b.1217, d.1244-1245). Though descended from the original line of earls, he was principally an English Baron, with lands in Prudhoe in Northumberland. As such, he sided with the English during the turmoil after the death of Alexander III, and was created 1st Earl of Angus in the Peerage of England in 1283. He was Governor of the castles at Dundee and Forfar in 1291 when the Regents of Scotland surrendered the kingdom to Edward I, but he refused to hand them over without guarantees, as they had been entrusted to him by the Scottish nation, and Edward acceded to his demands. He was created 1st Lord Umfraville, also in the peerage of England, in 1295.
Gilbert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus (r. 1246–1308) was the first of the Anglo-French de Umfraville line to rule the Earldom of Angus in his own right.
His father was Gilbert de Umfraville (d. shortly before 13 March 1245), a Norman, and feudal Baron of Prudhoe in Northumberland, and his mother was Matilda, Countess of Angus. He succeeded his father in infancy.
He also carried on the line of the earlier Gaelic earls through his mother. He succeeded her sometime after 1247 (when she was still living with her third husband Richard de Dover) as an infant, certainly no older than three.
Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, paid £10,000 to act as Gilbert's warden. Gilbert eventually grew into his inheritance, and although he was primarily an English magnate, there are still a few of his recorded grants. Gilbert was the nominal ruler of the province for more than half a century. As Earl of Angus he was summoned in 1276 for a campaign in Gwynedd against Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.In 1284 he attended the parliament with other Scottish noblemen who acknowledged Margaret of Norway as the heir to King Alexander.[1] In 1296 he again joined Edward I in his conquest of Scotland. He also founded a chantry for two priests at Prudhoe castle to celebrate mass daily.
He died in 1308, and was succeeded by his second son, Robert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus.

At his father's death, Gilbert became the ward of Simon de Montfort, Earlof Leicester. In 1296, Robert de Ros attacked Harbottle Castle. In 1298Gilbert fought with King Edward I against "Braveheart" William Wallace atFalkirk (22nd July). In 1306 he was one of the Scottish Earls opposed toRobert the Bruce who had just seized the crown from John Baliol. Gilbert's tomb cover resides in Hexham Abbey. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: The turn of the 14th century was a time of turmoil in Scotland. TheEnglish king Edward I, the "Hammer of the Scots", had reduced Scotland toa vassal state. In 1297 William Wallace had defeated the English army atthe Battle of Stirling Bridge, but on July 22nd Wallace himself wasdefeated at The Battle of Falkirk. He fled underground, and two men thenbecame joint Guardians of Scotland - John ' the Red ' Comyn and Robertthe Bruce (until 1300 when the place of Robert the Bruce was taken byIngram de Umfreville). John Balliol, the uncle of John ' the Red ' Comyn,was technically King of Scotland, but had surrendered Scotland to EdwardI in 1292. Baliol went into exile, and it was this man who WilliamWallace was attempting to restore as King of Scotland. Robert the Bruce,after the death of his father in 1304, found himself in competition forthe Scottish throne with the Comyn/Balliol family. SIR INGRAM DE UMFREVILLE (bef. 1281-1320) was probably a second cousin ofGilbert Earl of Angus with whom he fought against Wallace at Falkirk. Hereplaced Robert the Bruce as Guardian of Scotland in 1300. He fought withRobert 2nd Earl of Angus at Bannockburn where both were captured andransomed. SIR WILLIAM "BRAVEHEART" WALLACE, THE GUARDIAN OF SCOTLAND, evadedcapture for 7 years, but in 1305 he was betrayed as he slept by a wellnear Glasgow. He was tried for treason and executed on Aug, 24, 1305. Hewas hung, drawn and quartered, then beheaded. King Edward I had Wallace'shead impaled on a spike on London Bridge.
