=== Life Sketch ===
Sir John de Bohun I was a Baron by writ of lands in England and Ireland. As England began to become a land of laws, Sir John deBohun, Baron by Writ of lands in England and Ireland became a member of Parliament as Baron Midhurst. He served in the retinue of Earl of Arundel in the French Wars. This was also the time of the Black Plague.
He was Lord of Midhurst, Ford, Sussex, and Rustington in England and inherited his grandmother’s lands in Ballymadd Co. Kildar, Ireland. In retinue of Earl of Arundel in French Wars. Member Parliament as Baron of Midhurst. Sir John’s parents were James de Bohun II and Joan de Braose.
Midhurst, which means 'town in the middle of the wood', was part of the lands under the lordship of Arundel and Chichester.
It is not possible to look at the history of Midhurst without considerable reference to the Cowdray family. At the beginning of the 13th century, Henry I gave Midhurst to the Norman Baron, Savaric Fitzcane and through him the de Bohuns established their lordship over Midhurst and continued until 200 years later when de Bohuns died.
During the families ownership, the fortified castle on Tan Hill, known as St. Ann's Hill was built and acted as the principle residence until 1492 when they moved to a more comfortable house known as 'La Coudraye', built on the lower ground beyond the river.
Having moved to La Coudraye, the family abandoned the castle and it fell into ruin. The foundations were unearthed in 1913.
JOHN DE BOHUN, who was summoned to parliament as Baron of Midhurst, 1364 (37th EDWARD III.) "This is he (say Dugdale) who for his great services in Flanders, and elsewhere beyond sea, in 14th EDWARD III. (when the king first laid claim to the crown of France), as also in that famous expedition into France, 19th EDWARD III. (shortly after which, the king obtained that glorious victory at Cressy, whereof our historians make ample mention), became afterwards one of the BARONS of the realm, being summoned to sit in parliament, in 37th, 38th, and 39th of that king's reign."
